Other People's Words: The Cycle of Low Literacy

Fascinating book
This book really opened my eyes to the reality of families in America who are illiterate. Their world doesn't involve or require print, so this is a fascinating account of people who are different than us, people who can't read amazon reviews. This book centers around a Mother and her son, Jenny and Donny, learning to read (from the Author of this book) over the course of 2 years. It is really amazing and I read this book cover to cover in 2 days. Highly recommend if you are interested in teaching english or just learning about the lives of others.

A wonderful true story!
I loved this book. it was required reading for a master's level class that I took. It was so interesting that it's earned a place on my permanent bookshelf (I usually trade in my texts). This is the story of a mother and child learning to read and becoming literate. It is poignant, true, and very touching. These are real people, and it's not only interesting but gratifying to read their story. There are many examples reproduced, and the presentation is educational and emotional. I found myself "cheering" for the mother and the son as they pursue a dream that most of us take for granted, literacy. The author did an excellent job of documenting this real life story.

but I really enjoyed reading it for this course
WOW! This book was really very eye-opening. I never thought about the plight of people who are illiterate, but the author opened my eyes to the day to day struggle of an illiterate family. I read this book for a masters level course on literacy, but I really enjoyed reading it for this course. It was very interesting and easy to read.

Other People's Words
This book gives insight into how individuals in our society today can go without learning how to read or communicate with the English language in regards to writing. It also shows how differences in dialect and regions in the country can create such a phenomenon. It also shows how to combat and overcome these trials and tribulations despite the setbacks one has experienced.
