Can you see where the tape is?

Yes, you can see the tape. It is not totally invisible. I used the tape on some "faux" leather chairs to stop the shedding that I later covered with cloth chair covers.

What should I use to clean the area before application of the patch?

Rubbing alcohol, works fine to remove any oils that might mess-up the adhesive. It is fantastic when applied to a clean surface! It was unesseceary to heat set it. NOTE - Most fake leather conditioners and treatments make the faux-leather look good but will actually Damage the molecular structure. To be safe use Turtle Wax Luxe Leather to clean and recondition when you're done.
