Does this actually absorb odors or just mask them?

Yes this product is as an odor absorber.

how quickly should i expect this to work? i am using in a small-ish bedroom (under 400sq. ft.) and have noticed no change/scent for last 36 hours

It should work. “Immediately”? Well, it might take 15 mins. Does that count as “immediate”? Also, you can slow the evaporation process by restricting the airflow over the crystals. For example, by putting the crystals in a glass jar with a metal lid and punching holes in the lid.
