Flashpoint Beyond

A Darkly Twisted, yet Nevertheless Happy Ending for the Flashpoint Batman (Review #564)
If you've been reading the new Justice Society of America (2022) series by Geoff Johns (which launched with the The New Golden Age (2022) one-shot alongside the Stargirl: The Lost Children (2022) miniseries also by Johns), then you should read this book as well. This and Doomsday Clock (2018) due to some references made here... and the original Flashpoint (2011) event since this is a sequel to it... and probably Justice League Incarnate (2022) while you're at it. The point is that this series serves as a significant gap filler for a handful of DC storylines and actually is just a really good story. While it's not vitally important to have read the other series I've mentioned, the book does a great job at filling unfamiliar readers in on what they need to know although it does make the book dialogue heavy at times, but they will make things a lot easier to follow. Johns is joined here by writer Jeremy Adams, whose work on the Flash starting with Vol. 16 (which I recently reviewed) has been largely a hit with fans, and Tim Sheridan, the writer on Teen Titans Academy which I have not read. Together these three writers weave an engaging slow burn of a series for the Thomas Wayne Batman, whose had quite a journey through the DC Universe starting pretty early in the Rebirth Era up through to now. This is an ending of sorts for the character, although his story will go on, but still a darkly twisted but happy ending nevertheless.Thomas Wayne wakes up alive and well in the Flashpoint timeline, which should have been erased from existence but still somehow exists. He becomes convinced a series of mysterious murders hold the answer to why this alternate existence has returned and may hold the key ending it all for good.Although the constant pessimism from Thomas about how nothing matters because nothing should exist can become repetitive and exhausting, it all serves a purpose. The series remixes the familiar Batman tropes but in a clever way that builds up the story. There is some bad story logic too, especially regarding the main antagonist displaying a near omniscience, but I really enjoyed it overall. I try not to read into the stories I read context that isn't there but this definitely seems to be a story about moving on.Most of the artwork in the book is solid. Xermánico does the six main issues with Mikel Janin taking on some scenes throughout. Both have a very dynamic style, that is very easy to follow on the page. It is Eduardo Risso who does the zero issue, and though the work isn't bad it can look a bit weird at times including some strange looking anatomy.Fair warning, this does take place (at least in part), concurrently with the Dark Crisis (2022) event by Joshua Williamson so be weary of light spoilers for that series. I was completely surprised by this book and I hope for a return to this world soon.5/5

Worth a second reading
Flashpoint? I hate it. Thomas Wayne in the normal continuity? I hate it as much as old man Logan in the 616 continuity. I dislike multiverses and wish Elsewords would be back. But I would lie if not admitting that I liked this story. It has the multiverse but reads more as a detective story, it doesn't cheat you the evidence and I re-read it again to check the clues I had missed. The artists are good, being subjectively a pleasure to see Risso's art in the first issue. I liked a lot that the conclusion was a consequence of character growth. If I am a bit vague is because detective stories are averse to spoilers, they ruin the enjoyment of the plot. It even solves my main issue against Flashpoint, about how unnecessarily depressing it is. So well done. Still I have a couple of doubts, though; but maybe another reading will solve them.

Great continuation of Thomas Wayne as Batman
I really enjoyed the Flashpoint storyline with Bruce Wayne having died and Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne surviving the shooting outside the theatre with Joe Chill. That world was supposed to cease to exist once Flash (Barry Allen) and Thomas Wayne's Batman corrected the past and made sure Bruce Wayne would become Batman in the true timeline. *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*Unfortunately, Thomas Wayne wakes up realizing his world is still here. Which leads him to believe that the mission he and Barry Allen succeeded in, actually failed or SOMEONE has changed the outcome; yet again. Thomas must discover what went wrong and by all means destroy his world so that the world in which his son Bruce survives and becomes the Dark Knight is saved. There are some twists and turns and characters I've never come across make themselves a big part of the plot.I was disappointed I wouldn't get to see more of this world where Thomas plays the caped crusader, Martha Wayne is the Joker and many characters are no longer who they originally were in this splintered alternate reality.Luckily DC realized people enjoyed seeing this alternate reality and decided to delve into this confusing world a little bit more.It continues where Flashpoint ended and this could be read on it's own (lots of flashbacks to make sure the audience knows how different this alternate reality is and the history of this world.) I loved the graphic novel and I'm happy to add this to our growing collection.I highly suggest this comic if you didn't get enough of the Thomas Wayne version of Batman and if you just wanted to be exposed to this alternate reality a little longer. It did not disappoint!! It wrapped up the story nicely but also left a backdoor open (just in case this world has another story to share in the future.)

Flashpoint Beyond
Thomas Wayne believed he'd saved history by helping Barry Allen restore the timeline in 'Flashpoint', but when he wakes up to find life hasn't changed he finds himself facing off against an outraged Aquaman and a Superman who is preparing Earth to fight off a Kryptonian invasion fleet.Fantastic artwork and a compelling storyline which examines a family dynamic on a deeply personal as well as a global scale.
