A French oriented view of Napoleon from an Englishman.
Reading this book was really interesting for me as it contradicted things that I had been taught in my youth. I was brought up in an English biased school system, in Jamaica, and read books written by British writers. As a result my view of Napoleon has always been that he was a military genius whose genius and boundless energy was misdirected. This book contradicts that view and has motivated me to read more about him. I recommend it.

A great read for free from Kindle
It's amazing what is available through the Kindle library, especially the free books. I'm always looking for a bargain and Amazon has a lot of great bargains in long-out-of-print books. If I need a particular book and I don't want to borrow from a library or purchase a used book, I'm always looking at Amazon's free Kindle books first. It's a great service. Take advantage of it.

Kindle edition discombobulated. PLEASE REMOVE!
Beginning is not the beginning. Parts are out of order or missing entirely. There are even parts of some other book added, though I have no idea what its title is.However, this is an exception to this most exceptional series of biographies written by the brothers Jacob and John Abbott in the mid-nineteenth century.

Napoleon Bonaparte
Sorry to say that even as an instructor in European history, I abandoned this tale of Napoleon. Although adequate, the style is, like so many histories, staid and boring while providing the necessary facts.

Napoleon did what he had to to save France.
The losers do not write the history books. A look from the French prospective at a very difficult time at the end of the reign of terror. Perhaps the English were as much to blame as the French people! The other monarchs of Europe fell upon the French like jackels.

interesting but confusing
This is a good overview of Napolean's rule. The only real complaint I have is the long paragraphs, and no chapters. There are no breaks it seems. However this book originally was written a while back so part of it could just be style. Another thing is one second you feel like you're reading a history text book the next it's like historical fiction.I was pleased for the fact that I was just interested in knowing more about him but wasn't overly impressed either.

Fun read but biased and unedited
Shows Napoleon only in a glowing light. Totally unsourced but entertaining. Whole sections of text repeated,, out of order, or irrelevant. Many spelling errors.

Boring
This book doesn't start at the beginning of Bonaparte's life, or even career. No information about how he came to power. It jumps straight into a war with France and Austria/England. The author clearly idealises Bonapart. There is no clear narrative and it ends suddenly. Overall don't bother with this.

Interesting topic, but marred by poor editing.
Having read quite a few classic books, it's surprising how many relate to the French revolution. This will explain my interest in delving a little deeper by reading this historical document. Most parts were educational for me, having no previous study. The book was not in chronological order, and it seemed to omit Napoleon Bonaparte's early career, and his ultimate demise. In addition, there were a couple of sections that seemed to be extracts from a completely different book, inserted by mistake. Poor editing spoiled an otherwise interesting book.

Disappointing
I am an avid reader of war books. I found the start of the book interesting about the battles in Italy and the Defence of France. However the book started to go into the more diplomatic approach and became tedious. If you are looking for books about France in the time of Napoleon then I recommend the osprey series
