I am a female with a 47 inch chest, but an hourglass through waist and hips. Will a large suffice? Is material stretchy at all or stiff?

A large should be perfect for your hourglass figure, material is not really stretchy , so u should be safe with a large.

Yes, it is tapered. I bought it for my husband when he had shoulder surgery thinking it would be roomier & buttoned down the front. I was too fitted & tapered so certainly did not fit the bill for what I wanted. I hope this helps & answeres your question.
