If you are at the upper end of the Taktrax size range listings and will be wearing large boots like winter Sorrel pack boots, you may want to go up one size. For example, I wear a men's 10.5 shoe so the regular sizing says the medium goes up to size 11. But with the pac boots you really have to stretch them hard to fit over the soles, so I got a large for those boots as well as a medium for regular shoes.

Do these work well to run with on concrete sidewalks that are partially clear with snow and/or ice remaining only in spots?

When they were originally made in Boulder, Colorado, I could run 2 dogs every day for 1-4 miles and get at least one winter and part of the next on mixed ice and pavement. When they off-shored the coils compressed then wore down and rusted and the rubber fatigued within a week or 2. In other words they increased their profit margin by turning the product into trash by using a lower grade of steel and spacing the coils further apart. So it is possible but not when the investors are too greedy.

No size chart? What size is women's 8-9?

I wear a Women's size 8. The manufacturer sizing information on the box, says for U.S. Women's Size 8, get a SMALL YakTrax. I have KEEN winter boots,size 8 medium. Keen's winter boot have a substantial heavy sole. There is no way that I can stretch the YakTrax Size S onto the KEEN boots. A medium would fit (but I haven't tried yet). The YakTrax SMALL just barely fits over a pair of "fashionable" winter boots, size 8, that have a dainty-sized,or thin sole. I suggest that you take your boots into a store and fit the YakTrax on before purchasing. If the stretch is too tight, you'll know right away (it'll strip off your nail polish and split a nail or two attempting). Be careful during the stretch 'cause it's like a sling shot! It can take an eye out! :) You want a YakTrax size that's easy enough to take off when you go indoors because on stone floors, these are slippery and on carpet, they will rip up the carpet. The manufacturer sizing information is misleading.

Getting for a woman who is 73 and in pretty good shape. Would you recommend for her?

I have owned these for two years but really put them to the test today. Even the snow was coated with ice which did not collapse under my weight, but I was able to easily walk with them! I am completely impressed, but I agree with not wearing them indoors. After my elation at not falling on the ice and seemingly doing OK walking on a tile floor in the Metro station, I fell when stepping off the train onto the same tile floor. I stayed on the floor and removed them before preceding on my way. I am an "older lady" and think these are great for anyone. They pretty much require you to sit down to put them on, however, or maybe you could put them on most of the way and then put on your shoes. I have not tried that method yet.

An absolute necessity if you want to avoid falls in the winter.

I find the Yak Trax product to be the best of all that are available. Easy to install, light and very durable. What with the salt used on the sidewalks today the rubber will eventually breakdown but mine lasted five years before this happened. Although I bought another pair I was able to repair the old ones with some bicycle tire tubing and Shoo Goo. A bit more expensive than some but what are your bones worth?

Great traction and comfort!

This is my third set (ALL different) and by far my favorite. I have had the cleats that have metal pokes, metal prongs and these metal wire gripes...I did well with the metal pokes but they tend to break off easier. My husband and I live in Wisconsin and WALK a 5K every single morning. Rain, Sleet, Snow, Ice...we go out! These worked great on ice, sleet and some snow. The ones with the pokes and prongs worked great ONLY on ice. Snow and sleet not so much. They would get clogged up and I found they became one big block of ice I was always cleaning. Also the pokes and prongs were uncomfortable to walk on when I hit clear pavement/road. On ice great not so much on clean sidewalks. These however, were great on the surfaces above PLUS were very comfortable when I came across clear clean pavement, sidewalks and roads. I would have to stop to take off the other ones and put back on when I hit ice. NOT these!!! I wore them the entire time and still made great time! I recommend these for walkers. I am not a runner so can't attest to that but for distance walkers these were great and comfortable!! ON SIZING: I wear a 10M womens. I bought the small and read some reviews saying they were small for boots or hiking boots/shoes..I would AGREE. I was concerned since I would be at the beginning of a bigger size (MED) that they would stretch TOO much. So I bought a Small and Med. The small fit my Brooks shoes great and the Med did the trick for my Ahnu Hiking/walking boots. These were the definite winner!!
