Teaching is great. Patterns are personal opinion.
I bought this particular book for a friend of mine learning to knit. I used it before and found it very helpful. (I picked it up way back in December 29, 2011, which I know because I use the sales ticket as a bookmark.)The explanations of techniques with the visuals are great. I really did learn to knit with it -- casting on, binding off, changing to a different skein, weaving in loose ends -- the stuff to actually start and finish a project. The book teaches the English method of knitting, of course. It also teaches the Continental style so that we left-handers aren't stuck trying to invert the English method. (I knit Continental.)The one downside - for me - is the patterns. A few I enjoy enough to make, but overall there aren't many I would use. It's not because I'm a guy, either. I can spend hours wandering around a yarn shop the same as anybody. I could adapt a few no problem, I'm just not a major fan overall. Plus, Ravelry has near infinite patterns with ratings, so enjoyable projects with well designed patterns aren't hard to find. The finished products aren't really the focus though. They mainly serve as opportunities to practice certain stitches and techniques. They are created by real knitters from the target population of this book, so there was definitely thought put into this section. They are also modeled by the creators in full color. Those pages are beautiful. It feels very collaborative.5 stars because the beginner level teaching is the best I've found in a book. I'm not taking off any for the patterns because my thoughts are subjective. They aren't a problem with the book and shouldn't be a barrier to buying this. Some people will love them.I did use one pattern: the Big Bad Baby Blanket with Madelinetosh Tosh DK Georgia O'keefe. It's a variegated green that looks even better in person. It's not with me, otherwise I'd upload a photo. Maybe in the future. Two bits of advice for beginning knitters:1) Buy this book.2) Buy soft yarn you enjoy touching. Don’t go for the rougher or more stiff yarn because it’s cheaper and you’re not sure if you’ll stick with knitting. You’re going to spend hours touching this stuff, even if you don’t stick with it this time. The yarn needs to be gentle on your hands and to be something you actively want to touch.

For your college students! A great help!
I bought this (along with a few other Quick Study charts) for my freshman college son who is studying business and accounting. He was incredibly pleased and happy with this chart and told me it was going to be immensely helpful to him in his studies.

This is especially helpful for us non-account types. This Quick Study guide, in conjunction with the Accounting 1Quick Study guide, the Accounting Equations & Answers Quick Study guide, and WIlliam G. Droms' book, "Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers" go a long way to filling in the blanks for those of us whose focus is necessarily elsewhere
