Better than I expected, fascinating reading
When I first picked up the book, I thought it would be pretty dry. I started to read it region by region and got more interested with every page. I love the authors style and candor, very entertaining. It is pretty amazing that the author has survived all of the dangerous places he has written about without at least one nutjob killing him. Hope he survives to write another couple of editions, I'll buy them too.

An interesting book but outdated by tomorrow' headlines.
This book is about the worlds most dangerous places in the world (as of about six to eight years ago.) .In all fairness to the author however,, to keep up with current events, the book would have to be updated six times a year. We were all shocked when the Taliband cut off the head of an American Journalist on television... I n an effort to play can you Top This The next Islamic Radical Group brings out a pair of infidels to butcher. What can top that? A group of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians, was put to tthe sword. What is next? How about a group of 300 young and innocent school girls in Nigeria.. As soon as Iran gets a couple of nuclear bombs the most dangerous places in the world will be tev aviv and new yourk city

Only once or twice have I ever felt especially blessed in buying a great book...
And I dont remember the other times. The Worlds Most Dangerous Places is such a worth while read that it smacks me out of any boredom at a given moment with the impact and harsh realisms almost of a travel bible or Quran. It awakens one to reality. It is really worth while information to know and is garnished with accurate and keen humor at every possible moment needed. The wording is cohesive and smooth like the writer really had a "gift for gab" or has just been through it all.In each detail, realistic information- however brutal sets the tone for being politically active, awake as well as a willingness to get dirty and skilled in self defense minimally. On another note this well written book was actually missing some anticipated information. Its funny but I invisioned some of the content atleast would cover crocodile infested rivers and blood sucking fish in remote primitive areas of the world. After the first 10 pages of reading it is clear that "Dangerous Places" takes on a more political, modernistic tone with rather moderate coverage of remote uncharted regions with their tribes, huts and headhunters. In that sense I was rather disappointed as many places mentioned are also well covered in the news media and continuously too such as the Middle East.I was hoping for a book catored toward tourists and eco travel firstly but it reminds me of a publication geared toward journalists, security advisors or scientists as many locations mentioned were far from fantastic, tranquil or exciting in imagery.I cant percieve anyone who would consider most of the places mentioned as even remote vacation spots. I thought for sure there would be dialogue of huge tropical and untapped island of New Guinea and its well reputed high crime rate or perhpas coverage of islands of Haiti and Dominican Republic and lesser known even mysterious Buru island, Sumatra etc. Then there are the polar regions and perhaps locations with difficult weather patterns such as monsoons or landslides. All that often undiscovered material was nicely covered at a minimum with the exception of several locations in cliche' over coveraged Africa which was satisfactory.

A must read
As usual Mr. Pelton has done a great job writing this book. He writes from experances not hear say and this book, like his others are not a bunch of bull shit written by a wanna be. He has boots on the ground experience in some very nasty places durring the worst of times (our paths crossed briefly in one of them). If you whant to know the truth about places YOU dare not go, or are planning to ADVENTUR TO.Read his books !

Despite Outdating, A Magnificent Guide
This 2003 edition is somewhat outdated but provides an invaluable background look at the world's most dangerous countries and helps prepare you for today's status quo. Consider it a short list of places less preferable than sunbathing in Antarctica in your skivvies. Pelton carefully explains that good information, preparation, and common sense will get you through all the countries listed. If you are stupid enough to read this and say "there's a great place to take the kids for summer vacation -- they're insured." But if you want to find out more about Chechnya and the war against Russia that has roped us in or the Byzantine society in India, this is a great place to start.
