I want to use it to play music at night...can you turn the volume down low?

The first one is that press the corresponding button on the speaker. There are three buttons on the speaker: +, - and power button.Long press on the button of + for three to five seconds, you could increase the volume to the sound you want. Long press on the button of - for three to five seconds, you could reduce the volume to the sound you want. If you want to forward to the next song, the speaker will automatically play the next song after single click the the button of +. If you want to backward to the previous song, the speaker will automatically play the previous song after single click the the button of -. The second way is to adjust it on the device connected with the Bluetooth. For example, when your speaker is connected with your iPhone, you could operate it in your iPhone. How far away from your phone can this speaker be and still connect

What file types does the speaker play via SD Card?

All my songs are in .mp3 you can use the free program called audacity to edit the song and save it to mp3.

Do you have to have an sd card inserted to use it, or can i just use the bluetooth feature ?

yes, you can use it without the sd card. It does not come with an sd card. It is pretty loud for such a small device
