Subtraction Facts that Stick: Help Your Child Master the Subtraction Facts for Good in Just Eight Weeks

Excited to try this 8 week program
When searching for ways to help my daughter better understand subtraction, I found this book. It was suggested in one of my favorite homeschool books-The Well Trained Mind-A Guide to Classical Education at Home. I searched everywhere to see the inside before making the purchase but no one posted photos with their review. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to provide photos of the inside either since it specifically states that we are not allowed to.So I’ll do my best to give you a glimpse of what to expect with this 8 week program. The program breaks down the 81 subtraction facts into eight units. (one unit /week)Each unit targets a small group of subtraction facts that can be solved using the authors method.By the end of the eight week program, your child should learn all their subtraction facts. The author uses direct teaching( Don’t worry if you don’t know how to teach. Everything is laid out for you), games, and written practice to help your child master the focus facts for the week.It is suggested that you schedule a consistent time each day for subtraction fact practice and activities should last about 15 minutes each day.All the game boards and practice pages you’ll need for this program are included in the book ( with the exception of a few everyday items-listed below). The pages are perforated so you can tear out each lesson. Since I may use this in the future, I made copies ( Genius Scan app) and printed out the lessons. You will need a few everyday items:20 small counters of two different colors, Coin, two game tokens, deck of regular playing cards, regular six sided die, and paper and pencilWe are starting the program today and it is very straightforward and simple. This should be a great supplemental activity and I will provide additional information at the end of the 8 weeks.

Take this out of your wishlist and just buy it!
My 7 year old son who was struggling with math and about 6 months behind his peers is no longer struggling! I bought this book (along with the Addition book) because my son did not struggle with the concept of addition or subtraction, just the execution of it and it all came down to not having his math facts memorized. Each week, Day 1 consists of a lesson followed by learning a subtraction game. Days 2-5 of each week have a practice page with math problems (ones they are focusing on for this week plus a few from previous weeks thrown in).We completed the 6 weeks of Addition Facts that Stick (by the same author) and began Subtraction Facts that Stick 2 weeks ago. Today, I was doing the lesson with my son... the same son who was in tears about how hard math was and how bad he was and how much he hated it 2 months ago. I was asking him to answer some subtraction math facts. They were just clicking and he looed at me and said, "Mom! I think this is actually fun" and proclaimed later this evening how much he loves math. These were new problems we had not yet worked on. It was apparent that 2 weeks of using the books by this author gave him the tools to get to the answer mentally in other ways besides counting his fingers. The games are fun (for what they are), the teaching is laid out, and this really does help kids who are struggling with their math facts!

Really helps kids with their facts!
These books are amazing! We did the addition with my kindergartner and now we’re doing the subtraction and he truly gets his math facts! Fun games, easy way to teach. Love these books!

Sound activities but format could be improved
I am a former elem school principal and bought this to work on subtraction facts with my 8 old grand-daughter during COVID. The mathematics is sound as are the activities and the progression week by week (only a few minutes at a time) is well-paced. There are many games that reinforce the patterns being introduced. The problem is the way the book is published. Had it been spiral bound, it would be so much easier to use because the book would lay flat and it would be possible to play the games right in the book. Instead the only option is to photocopy the gameboards and the directions are nowhere near. A little reorganization and different formatting would make this a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and paraprofessionals.

Fun math book
Repetitive enough to help with sticking, but not so it is boring.

My child is has greatly improved!
I debated not buying Subtraction Facts that Stick because we have already done Addition Facts that Stick. I figured we could replay the addition games but just change them to subtraction. I am so glad we didn't do that and we purchased the actual subtraction book. My child has improved so much! He is already asking when we can buy Multiplication Facts that Stick because he likes the different games and he can see the difference in how he remembers the facts.

Easy, practical and spot on!
Absolutely the best book you can buy if your child is struggling to get to grips with the concept of substraction! The author addressed all my questions and really understands how kids think. This book is easy to use and teaches the subtraction facts in an eight-week period, with good examples, a fun game and some exercises for each week. We are only halfway through the book, but I can already see a huge improvement in my son’s attitude to maths. He also approaches subtraction problems with more confidence and even refers to the book as our fun book! He cannot wait to do the fun book every day! I can not recommend this book highly enough. Fabulous!

Maths book
Excellent book for kids and anyone who wants to understand how to subtract using the tens frame method. In Switzerland and Germany kids learn to subtract using similar methods in school. Therefore it is great for parents who speak English to get a clear explanation so they can teach and support their kids in school. It is also great for those who homeschool their kids.
