can i use this with a 3.5hp p.m. motor?

It depends on what voltage you are running. 3.5hp at 230V (single phase) should draw around 10 to 12 amps. I don't know what the switch is rated for, how many amps. That is what I want to know. Hope this answers your question. I assume you are using single phase service and not 3-phase. For 3-phase it is totally different. If so, tell me and I will do calcs for 3-phase.

How does this screw into an electrical box, there is a nut on the back?

The nut is for shipping only, remove and disregard and use screws supplied to install

Is this switch magnetic holding closed or mechanical? Rather, if I trip the breaker while using, will the machine start when I reset the breaker?

If you trip the breaker and don't turn off the switch it will still be on, (machine will start), so... mechanical.
