Works well
I bought this to assist in soldering printed circuit boards and it does the job well, pretty sturdy with strong magnetics means third hands are stable and easy to use. The third hands can be easily bent to suit and I have found it to be a real help in soldering components onto PCBs. The only criticism is the poor quality of the grips as they bend easilly if you try to use them to change the position one of the stalks, make sure you have a good grip on the stalk to bend it. The grips themselves have plastic covers to protect the PCB so great little unit.

An excellent bit of kit
When searching for a soldering handy arm I was put off by those with plastic bendy arms, this device has metal goosenecks ... they are easy to adjust, even by small increments and hold their position well. The magnetic base is sturdy and nicely heavy, with rubber feet that can be mounted to prevent slipping. Magnetic holding arms can be repositioned to get the best position; they are held firmly and do not unintentionally shift. Having two lengths of bendy arms was, I thought, a gimmick ... but it makes positioning components more flexible. The alligator clips are of good quality with firm grip and plastic covers on the jaws and opening clip. They push mount into the necks and are held in place with a tightening screw (I find this can easily loosen and needs tightening, but easy to do) ... there are some spare alligator clips and tightening screws supplied. The inclusion of 4 PCB holders is a bonus! The only feature missing is a light, I already had a sheet music light and this clips on nicely to illuminate the working area. Highly recommended!

Great product
Received this and on first thoughts it’s of great quality The plate is extremely thick and sturdy The magnets are of a good quality and quite strong I have not used this yet but can see that it will work well The long crocodile arm magnets could be stronger or it would be good for them also to be able to attach to the plate by some quick release holders for it to be even better . My only gripe is the sticky rubber mounts on the bottom are if poor quality and I can see them falling off and being lost . It’s a shame that you cannot fix them securely and permanently. There are also 6 holes in the plate and I’m not sure as to what these are for . All round a great quality product that will work well

Effective tool
Very flexible setup with all arms freely movable/removable on the heavy metal base. Holds items solidly, a great help to soldering and rework.

Sturdy, useful tool
Love this. It has a heavy base, and the arms work quite well. It certainly improves my ability to position a board for soldering - more so than the 'third hand' device I have been using for half a century. Very pleased with this purchase.

I wanted this to be good
But the other low star reviewers are right. The metal plate is badly finished, mine was also bent, it wobbles. I’ll have to screw it down to a table as it is difficult to bend back to flat. The magnets aren’t as strong as I’d like, very easy to move the accidentally. Also the clips are particularly cheap and easy to bend/break. Even the heat shrink over the teeth was bad and had to be replaced with better quality. Not particularly happy for £30, but I’ll make use of it…

Great set of helping hands.
Ideal for hobbies where you need a spare pair of hands. The overall size of the unit is not very large, about 1ft square. The hands clamp to the metal base plate via strong magnets allowing you to move them to different positions and the clamps at the end are strong enough to hold item firmly., e.g circuit boards, model parts etc. It is a tad expensive compared to other similar products but you get what you pay for. Overall a good purchase that should last many years.

I also bought a 992D soldering station from Preciva, together with this Third Hand. I did a separate in-depth (five star) review for it. Look there for a lot more information if you’re also considering getting that. Fact is, this Third Hand and the soldering station, for me, are now inseparable. The 992D soldering station really shines in stability. That’s because the iron’s handle is really formed well and easy to hold, also when moving it around a workpiece. The flexible cable really helps too. Feels like an upmarket tool. And in this context I can highly recommend the Third Hand ! Whereas a very ergonomic iron is great, a lot of frustration when soldering often stems from the fact you don’t seem to have enough fingers/hands to hold your workpieces/parts. And that’s where this Helping Hand comes in. It takes the annoyance out of precise soldering. I didn’t have one before and really keep asking myself now how I got along without it. It’s great. Its magnets are strong, there’s lots of flexibility (both in terms of movability as in ways it can help) and the clamps are tight (but not overly so). Covered in isolating heat shrink tubing, they help reduce the chance of ESD. I tried it out and soldered several trial components to a test board first and it really worked well. I was impressed by both the Helping Hands and soldering station. If there’s one thing that might be improved in the Third Hand, it’s the tightening of the crocodile clamps to their flexible rod. I have to tighten the screws down quite hard. And oh yes, the four small pointy ‘standees’, which otherwise do an excellent job of holding a PCB, are extremely sharp at the point, mostly because of small burrs. I carefully filed those off using a very smooth file and decided to keep them in storage until I needed them. When using the hot air function I was able, with the help of the really grippy crocodile clamps of the Third Hand, to carefully desolder chips from where they were on their PCB. I also used the hot air to melt the isolation off cables and apply heat shrink tubing to soldered together wires. Everything was neatly held in place by the clamps, exactly where I wanted everything to be. I’m very happy with this and my other (the 992D soldering station) purchases. Everything works well and I can reassure everybody doubting to buy this (as I was), you’ll be very happy with these too !
