An even better version of a great book
I owned a previous edition of this book, and there are several huge improvements in this new edition. The text has been re-formatted, making it easier to read. Existing diagrams have been cleaned up or enlarged, and there are several new diagrams and photos. All of the revisions contribute to making this Runic work book much easier to use. Another thing is that the paper and covers are more durable than the previous edition - which is very helpful as it is the type of book that you will be re-reading and flipping through many times. The book itself is spectacular. I remember feeling very impressed by it and excited when I first read it. It is essentially a book of exercises for those who would dare to seek the primal Mysteries themselves, within the Germanic tradition. The approach is one that encourages individual experience and developing power within yourself - It is in many ways the dynamic opposite of dogmatic modern religions that demand belief and faith, but don't encourage experimentation. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Runes, the Rune Gild, or Germanic mysticism and magic in general.

Great - But Kindle Version isn't loading Images (on Mac)
I mostly read on a Macbook using the kindle app. This book's contents are great and awesome and all... but all the images are broken on the Kindle version (for mac.) So I couldn't see any of the Rune symbols being discussed - instead it was a broken image. I tried on my android phone, and the images loaded but they were super small, I couldn't see them well (magnifying the page on mobile doesn't help, the images still render super small.)However, I'm going to get the paperback version. The content of the book is great, and I really hope the author or publisher see's this comment so the kindle version can get corrected.

Problematic for amateurs, recommended for those experienced in magick and divination.
In all honesty, this was a meandering guide that should have been assembled and compiled in a more cohesive fashion. In some books on magick, the beginning chapters are on practicing meditation and visualization before moving on to energy work and then rituals. This is pretty disorganized, and there are other recommended books one should read before proceeding further. As a casual read, it's problematic. I would like to come back to this and work through it as it's intended to be studied and practiced, but only if the reader is experienced in this sort of thing. Not to put the author down, as I respect him as an accomplished scholar and academic, but his work is hard to grasp for most folks. If you are experienced in magick and divination, then this book would be a great addition to your book shelf. If you are curious or simply dabbling in the esoteric, then this will prove too much, as it's just so much information to process. As I have said, I would be much better off coming back to this after I have read the recommended books and earned some experience in this particular field (magick and divination), but that wouldn't be realistic. I don't believe in any gods, and I don't trust magick and divination enough to truly be open-minded to consider it worthwhile.

Not what I expected, but could be great for some.
Naïveté led me to purchase this, but that is no reason to say this is a bad book. I was looking for more of a over-view of the more traditional aspects of the runes. I understood that there is very little out there in a 'official pre-christian' regard, but I didn't realize just how 'ceremonial magick' this course was. I had read the reviews that said that it was rather Golden Dawn-ish, and figured it had SOME aspects like that, but... The course is absolutely like the Golden Dawn/OTO/AA when it comes to the structure. I fully understand that there is nearly no information (as noted before) of pre-christian worship/etc, and that 'holes need to be filled', but this is a bit more 'high magic' than I would have wanted.None of the above means that it is a BAD book. It just seems to have been presented in a way that led me to believe that it was a different book than it was. I'm sure that there are plenty of people that will find this to be a great guide. And, I also agree that this wouldn't be the best first book on runes (for reasons other than the above), as the 'required reading' for the first part is rather lengthy. If one wanted to pursue this rigorous path (which it is shown to be when you read the book), you'll probably want to get this, yet be prepared to immediately buy several more books before even beginning things.Hope this helps someone who is looking into getting this!!!

All of edred thorssons books should be essentials for runesters and asatruars
just started the other day on the first door. from what i can tell it will take a year or more to perform the rites to get through all 9 gates but looking forward to it as i have been studying the runes off and on since 2013. my first kindred gothi recommended this book for daily rites for asatruars and i am very pleased with it so far.

Excellent!
I own a previous edition of this book as a member of the Rune Gild. Right away, the new edition is noticeably more durable. That matters as a book that I reference many times, and will find use for years to come. The recommended reading lists have been updated as well. Illustrations are great, fonts are easy to read, and my overall impression is 5 stars! I already know the curriculum inside the book is both demanding and rewarding.Buy this book! Seek the mystery!

Kindle version is not worth the price
Scrolling is not an option, which makes this book hard to read, as there is a lot of information to skip if you’ve read Futhark and are already disciplined with basic meditation. Some of the verbiage is super hammy, and I’m personally not a fan of being given specific time lines for learning something (it just creates a mental block, which defeats the purpose anyway). But some people may enjoy spending a whole year learning just the name and meaning of each rune before advancing to the next step. The lack of being able to scroll is what killed this book for me, which sucks, because there’s a ton of good information in it. I think the kindle version should be priced at $5 at most. Add the scroll feature and this book bumps up a star.

The best ever course on runes
I first read this book in 1996, when I joined the Rune-Gild. It is the training manual for that organization, and presents a scheme of self-initiation via a lengthy and thorough programme of work. At that time I bought the Llewellyn edition, one of those books where they use vanishing glue on the spine and so it eventually becomes loose leaf. Then for some time it was only available as a Gild internal document, so the new edition brings this extraordinary work to the wider world in a form which does not fall apart. The scheme is very thorough, and amounts to a daily practice that you build up from a progressive menu of workings, new ones introduced in each of the 9 sections or 'Doors'. The work includes daily rituals, rune contemplation, magical diary (PAD or personal analysis diary), Germanic soul lore, breath and sound exercises that lead up to operative rune-galdor, the carving of runes leading up to the creation of runic talismans or spells, how to do rune-readings, energy circulation using runes and working with wights, both the lesser ones such as dwarves and the gods of Asgard. This scheme of magical work leads via the construction of a magical self (the Wode-Self), the composition of your own Rune-Poem and a brief introduction to seith, including utiseta ('sitting out' to discover your fylgia-animal) to the writing of your Master Work. There is also a very useful reading list for each Door. The whole thing will take you at least three years and is designed to take you to Mastery, which is where your mentoring Rune-Gild Master and other Masters of the Gild declare that you have reached a stage where you are expected to teach. Thus the Gild maintains a high standard of transmission of magical learning. If you are at all serious about working in the Northern tradition of magic, then you need to read this book.

Advanced book for developing heathen spirituality
Good text for heathens who want to develop their spirituality. Works well with other books on the Runes themselves. So I would buy a rune book first and then this one that guides you into different exercises. It encourages good practices such as completing a Galdor book also called a reflective practice journal (if you are a professional) or an emotional diary (if you are seeing a therapist/psychologist) or a book of shadows (if you are a wiccan). Really good, recommended if you want to develop your spirituality.
