The Annapolis Book of Seamanship: Fourth Edition

This is easily THE book to own for any sailor, new or experienced. It’s an index of sailing concepts and terminology, a guide to safety and navigation, and even a glossary of funky phrases. It starts from first principles, explaining in clear terms how boats work, and what makes sailing work. But it expands from a high-level how-to sail tutorial into a guide on pretty much everything related to sailing. There are sections on advanced sail trim, navigation, reading weather, understanding waves, rules of the road, racing, safety, and all while being extremely readable and without assuming you already know things. It's an invaluable resource — if you had to keep only one book on sailing, it’d be this one.

This is quite possibly the best book ever written on the topic. Seemingly complex sailing concepts and maneuvers are masterfully broken down and brought to the reader with such precision and grace one's solid grasp is almost guaranteed. A fantastic resource for newbies and veterans alike. Buy two, one for the boat and one for the house...unless your boat is your house...which in that case just buy one. :-)

This book is very detailed and informative. Tons of information but written easily enough to be understood by a novice sailor. The book covers every aspect a sailor needs to know.

My sailing school used this as the text for ASA 101, 103 & 104 rather than the ASA books. It really is a great book, however, the material is a bit disjointed and the index is not very comprehensive. Looks good on the coffee table, too!

Great book if you’re just getting into sailing or power boating. Great book to keep around for reference too. Rousmaniere has been doing an outstanding job with this book. It really is worth its wait in gold - especially if you’re getting started and want to avoid mistakes or hurting yourself and others. Do it. Get some.

This is the third purchase I have made over time of this book. My previous copies were dog eared and falling apart from usage. It is very well written and informative. It has been considered "the book" for learning sailing. I have been away from the sport for a long time, and got the book as a refresher. It has served me well from the time I was a Sea Scout through Maine Maritime Academy and beyond. A recommended read for anyone interested in Sailing from a novice to a seasoned sailor. I seem to learn something every time I read it.
