Not worth it - a painful read and not very informative
If you are looking for a book to help you figure out the many steps to moving to Canada legally (such as becoming a permanent resident) this book is not very helpful. For a book with step by step instructions on how to immigrate to Canada, I suggest reading "Moving to Canada: A complete guide to immigrating to Canada without an attorney" by Cori Carl, instead. I read that before this one (thank goodness).Ok so maybe "Canada an Expat's Guide" isn't helpful regarding immigration procedures, so does it provide anything useful regarding life in Canada? Not really. It doesn't contain anything you probably don't already know. Unfortunately this book contains mostly very general information (stuff you could glean by yourself on the internet) and a lot of "advice" that doesn't really apply to moving to Canada (just general stuff, like "get to know your neighbors so you won't be lonely", and that "buying a house can be a headache"). Stuff you probably know anyway as a functional adult. No need to waste your money on this book for that sort of information. The actual chapter on immigration is very vague (and short) and doesn't help much at all. The rest of the book is mostly fluff. There are a lot of errors and incorrect facts too. For example the author states that Vancouver is a Province and that British Columbia is in Vancouver. Oops -- its really the other way around. I wondered if maybe this book was a formula book and the author had just replaced "Canada" with some other country they had already written a book about. The reason I wondered that is that the column on costs in the table on "cost of living expenses" for Canada was labelled as "Mexican Pesos" instead of "Canadian dollars" in the table header... Hopefully the author will take a little time to edit and upload a new version of this book so there are fewer mistakes (I bought mine in June 2018),My biggest peeve: This book is very poorly written. In the first few chapters the grammatical errors and strange word choices only occur a few times per page but by the time you get into the 3rd chapter, there are grammatical errors and incorrect words and spelling errors in pretty much every sentence. There are a lot of incomplete sentences with no verbs, and many run on sentences. I actually began to suspect part way through reading this book that it was originally written in another language and then translated into English by someone who didn't work very hard at it. This book sorely needed the touch of an editor. I know that not everyone speaks or writes English fluently, and that is fine, but if you buy a book in English, you do expect a certain level of professional writing. Anyway, this is all just a gripe - and if the book had contained a lot of useful information, I wouldn't have worried about the writing style much. Yes, there are a few useful tidbits here and there, but by the time you get to them you have your doubts about how much the author knows about Canada.
