A Truly Great Western Novel
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Comanche Kid" by James Robert Daniels. Therewas a casual nod to "True Grit" by featuring a tough young heroine. Itwas one 0f the most authentic westerns I've read in a long, long time.Daniels knows his horses, his cattle, his men, and apparently hishistory.Jane's family is murdered by raiding Comanche Indians. Her youngestsister is taken hostage and young Jane pursues the raiding party andmanages to kill a number of them. But her sister's kidnapper managesto elude her. She gathers the remainder of her father's herd andbegins driving north with vengeance on her mind. Eventually, she meetsup with another herd and they agree to work together. Of course, shehas disguised herself as her twin brother and none of the other handsrecognize that she is a member of the fairer sex. The reader is in fora lot of fun watching her try to hide her sex from the others. Theother hands, after hearing of her exploits, christen her "The ComancheKid." Jane does her best to live up to her new nickname. The author does a bang-up job recreating a trail drive and itsever-present dangers. One can almost smell the cattle and the feel thedust from the trail, the heat from the sun, the cold nights, and asore bottom from long days in the saddle. The camaraderie of the handsprovide a truly cathartic experience as they go through the gamut ofemotional interactions.Jane's favorite among the hands is a young cowpoke nicknamed"Shakespeare." Of course, he has this name for a reason as he readsthe bard aloud and outlines the plays of the great writer. WhenShakespeare begins sharing a play about a woman masquerading as a manJane begins to fear that her secret is no longer safe. The Comanche Kid is quite an adventure. The one minor flaw was theanachronistic use of the dreaded "F-bomb" which did not see prevalentuse until the 1900's... It dropped a couple of times too often tomaintain the sense of reality so well captured in the rest of thestory.A fine robust western novel.

Daniels paints each character in depth with vibrant oils
This book was so much more than a shoot'em up western. Every character was clear transparency into the heart. I felt each ones despair, bruises, and hopes for a different future. He sank deeply into the soul of Jane, the female mc with all of her passion and volatile anger.Shakespeare, the male mc, displayed such tenderness and strength I came near to being undone.Loved all the rough and brutal action, the fierce weather, and even the love scenes that did not belabor you with voyeuristic details. Just a really excellent book.

Good Golly.
What a great, tragic, wonderful story. Loved the characters, loved the writing, loved the storyline. This man can write, and I'm praying he gets busy on his next one. Class A storyteller.

It stabbed my heart with truth and Justice and wrapped it up in love
There is a great deal of violence in this book. But none of it is gratuitous. There is also a great deal of love in this book. Not sexually graphic, love of many kinds, family love and brotherly love, love for the world God-made, love for horses, Love for people who act and look very differently than us. I have studied the West for years and I believe this plot is accurate to historical records. The ending does not disappoint. This book is one of my keepers.

Outstanding
I leave few reviews, so you can believe me when I say that this book was a joy to read. Mr Daniels told this story of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds with such clarity and truth. It wasn't twisted to jazz up a plot line. It was filled instead with the true emotions and confusion any thinking person feels traveling through life's journey during brutally hard times. Well done.
