Xuan Yuan Sword 7 (PS4) - PlayStation 4

Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is the latest in a long running series by Taiwanese developers Softstar and DOMO. You don’t need to have any knowledge of earlier titles to enjoy this entry fortunately, as it’s the first game that’s been brought to North America upon release.Based on a mixture of Chinese mythology and history, Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is an Action RPG where you portray an older brother on a quest to find help for his unwell younger sister. Thanks to a mysterious “King” he met locked in a magical building, our character has access to different sorceries and superhuman techniques.While it clearly did not have the same budget as a western AAA title (there are some stilted animations, and the graphics aren’t mind-blowing on a technical level), it more than makes up for it in heart. The gameplay feels fantastic, the art direction is gorgeous, the music is stunning, the story is a deep and multifaceted one (you may want to take notes, though they have a nice journal feature as more of the narrative unfolds) and there’s diverse and interesting side quests constantly, including a very cool mini game called “Zhuolu Chess”.These kinds of mini games are normally things I’m not too compelled by, but this one is both amazing on its own and has a continuing quest tied to it. There are special pieces that provide very specific and tactical moves, and as you play masters all over the country you earn new ones, keeping the game fresh and challenging as you make your way through the main storyline.All combined, Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is the epitome of “more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts”. Highly recommended. Here’s hoping we get more games released out here in the future.

Not developed by a AAA company, this game is a good example of how smaller studios can create amazing games with compelling stories and gameplay. This game won me over and I loved it, so I decided to buy my physical copy. Based on Chinese mythology, you explore ancient China whilst battling different monsters. This game is a blast and I cannot wait for Xuan Yuan 8 for the PS5!

Pretty great third person action RPG. It’s fun.

Game came in great condition. Only about 2 hours in. It's not what I expected. I thought it would be chinese dark souls. But, it's a more straight forward arpg similar to God of War. Very enjoyable especially with the han dynasty aesthetics. Designs are awesome combat is pretty good only gripe is the heavy attack. So far so good.

So this is the first game in this series I’ve played and have to say I really loved it. It’s a short game you can beat it in about 30 hours the game play is your typical hack and slash rpg there’s different stances you can do while gaining better gear armor charms or upgrading your sword. The story is wonderful basically saving your little sister won’t give away any spoilers. My biggest complaint with this game is the dialogue it’s sub and sometimes they talk so fast it’s hard to keep up or they start talking in the middle of a battle I wish there was a conversation log that you could go back and read the conversation but other than that loved this game.

What a great little game

I was curious about Xuan Yuan Sword 7, and after playing the game, i really enjoy it. The game offers several slightly different alternatives than other mainstream 1st person action adventure games. I do hope Sony and others introduce more games and offer more opportunities for game developers from non traditional sources.
