WELL WORTH THE WATCH...NOT TO BE MISSED
ON SOME LEVEL: I HAD ALWAYS BEEN AWARE THAT I HAD BEEN MEANING TO SEE THIS MOVIE FOR MOST OF MY ADULT LIFE.I GUESS I QUALIFY NOW..........AND I AM GLAD I WAITED.I was very young child when this movie first came out in theaters.... but l was bright and tended to "notice" a lot of nuances of things going on around me: even if sometimes only in a "simmering back-burner" sort of way.I knew the movie had won a lot of awards (including THE Academy Award), and there was a tremendous amount of buzz going around at the time about it that l remembered....and l still recall ALL of the music that the movie generated. It seems that in the back my mind l've always intended to see it...but l knew "you had to be a grown-up to see it".I guess l qualify now....and l'm glad l waited.Having been a "grown-up" for a number of decades made me astute at recognizing the nuances of emotions these characters were attempting to navigate. It was great to find this film on Amazon Prime home viewing. It was the right film at the right time of my life....and being in the privacy of my own home was an advantage as well....'cause sometimes l laugh too loud....and quite often l tear up inexplicably. I have a propensity for welling up and becoming absolutely soggy. Such was the case with this movie. Bring your box of tissue with you. You'll be OK.The story line was absolutely compelling. The Era was a "place in time" smack dab in the middle of the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s...complete with plentiful drugs and every sort of sexuality the era fostered. Smatterings of violence fit right in.That said: the themes were stark... and often heartless and gut-wrenching. What humor there was tended to be so subtle that it kind of sneaks up on you....but you'genuinely appreciate it when it happens. As the story evolved....it became obvious that (to me) the over-riding theme was that for all of our false bravado and feigned proficiencies: we are all at our core fragile and flawed....and many of us live our entire lives with a sense of desperation that we try to hide behind as we pursue the roles and self-image we have chosen for ourselves......and which we choose to show to the world.Check out the list of the performers in these roles: it goes without saying that the performances were stellar...and the writing gave them lots of fodder to slap their own style of acting on.I really am hesitant to say more: except that this movie is about the difficulties of navigating the convoluted paths our lives take us through. Some of us are well equipped for the journey.....some of us just think we are capable of handling whatever comes our way....and some of us know damned well that we are huge fakers, and lucky to even make it to the end of each day.To say more would give too much away. This movie will leave you questioning your own relationship with yourself ... and those you have known. You will laugh... You will cry.... And you will realize that it was a good thing you waited so long to see this movie. You will NOT forget it..

Well, I don't think I ever saw this...
in the late 60's since I was out of country. Later at home, I doubt I saw it. But, had I seen it at either time, nothing about it would move me in any particular way. This is actually very tame to what I already knew back then. So, from that perspective: 2 Stars from me; since most people liked it, I'll agree, so, 3 Stars overall. If you want to see a movie from that time period, but are similar to me, it's probably not worth your time. Otherwise, have at it. I doubt you will be disappointed with the acting. The sound track, etc, no comment.

2 grifters hustling and supporting each other to live in the big city
Midnight Cowboy was one of the best pictures released in the 1960s. It features Jon Voight as Joe Buck a Texan who leaves his town for the big city of New York to be a gigolo. There he meets Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) and they form a bond.Joe and Ratso come to rely upon each other so that they can survive in the city. One the one hand, the film shows the depths people will go to stay alive. They squat in an abandoned building. They hustle. They steal food. They try to sell sex. On the other hand they support and care about each other. Ratso for instance, gets sick and Joe is at his side trying to help him recover. They’re dreams are revealed as well such as when Ratso dreams of a life of luxury living in Florida. Joe’s motivation for going to New York are also revealed and it’s not a pretty story. It’s a remarkable world that the film creates. It’s two remarkable performances by Voight and Hoffman. It’s also a movie of its time. I don’t Hollywood would touch this story today. It casts such a bad image of New York City and some of the people in it that try to hustle and exploit others. It’s a one of a kind movie.C

An excellent film
This film is worthy of all praises. The story as well, is quite a solid work. Honest, gritty, brazen, charming, and dangerous, are all applicable words.
