Proto has overtaken Craftsman
After Sears sold craftsman tools turned to Proto, great tools.

Simple and sturdy classic
I needed a tough 1/2-inch drive ratchet, and wanted American-made. The price for this Proto was reasonable. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Roughly put together
It’s no frill. The ratchet mechanism is unrefined and engagement of the gears feels rough when the lever is turned. Those china made cheap stuffs sold in big box stores are better constructed. I will keep it only because it’s made in the USA.

Industrial Standard
This ratchet in all the sizes (1/4, 3/8) is the industry standard for industrial use. Virtually indestructible...i highly recommend this, mine has never failed. I'm pretty sure this is close to the Plomb classic (original brand name Proto stuff was sold under) from decades ago...and hasn't changed.Black oxide is the preferred industrial use finish. The chrome won't chip off and the tools are less slippery when they get oil or grease on them. Keep the tools dirty, oiled, or greased to avoid corosion. After continued use the tool becomes bare steel and looks grey...so they need to be kept oily or they'll rust.Proto will never fail you in a mission critical situation where you only have 1 tool. In Canada they are really expensive...but the Canadian oil sands will pay for the best. I recommend Proto over Snap-On...simply because they are better.

Don't buy if you want your socket to stay on.
Unlike the spud rachett it has a ball bearing so the socket can easily pulled on and off. The spud version you need a nail or a screw or something to pop off socket. Not pleased with this version for security of the socket.

Very comfortable handle, perfect grip and leverage
Nice handle, perfect grip. Right length gives a very good leverage.
