My arms seem to do all the work. when i push up into the stand, my butt pops up off the seat & i don't feel it in my legs. what am i doing wrong?

There are plenty of videos showing proper usage as well as different workout routines for exercising with this rower on Sunny Health & Fitness' YouTube channel. To me it sounds like you’re not using your lower body to perform the squat, which is the muscles you'll need to mainly focus on to really get that glute workout. Try emphasizing more on PUSHING your legs out rather than PULLING yourself up with each row.

Does the handle bars move or is that part stationary.

The handle bars move all the way back and forth. You have the option to use the straps on the handle bars or not for more of a work out. I love this machine!

does the hydraulic cylinder give the machine a smoother motion, compared to the cheaper model?

I think it's a very smooth and easy/fluid motion, yet it gets your heartrate really going and works all your big muscles. I've had the machine for about 1 month now and absolutely love it. (I'm a daily exerciser who is 6 ft tall and weighs 220).

Is this good for abs?

It's more for you buttocks, legs and thighs. I've been using mine everyday since I bought it, I love it. I have not seen any change in my abs.
