Brody's Ghost - A Review By Ryan J Slattery
I bought Brody's Ghost after finding out about it on Mark Crilley's youTube channel.Mark Crilley's youTube channel has literally hundreds of videos helping people increase their art knowledge and skills. I bought Brody's Ghost to get a better idea of how to layout a graphic novel. But I wouldn't have done that if the story didn't seem interesting. In fact the story was extremely well told. I finished the collected edition in under 24 hours. It had fun, sometimes funny, thoughtful characters that I really enjoyed reading about. I found myself wanting to read on even when I had more pressing things to be focused on - the sign of a good story. The storytelling in terms of scene structure and overall story arc was also fairly great. The art style really lent itself to a fast-paced story.I only had two small issues:1. Brody's character arc wasn't super strong and
2. Talia's power to possess Brody to get him out of 2 really bad situations was introduced very late in the story and because it wasn't referenced or foreshadowed earlier made it feel extremely "convenient." To be fair, how it "worked" in the climax was a great idea though. I just wished it had been foreshadowed or mentioned earlier in the story so it didn't come out of nowhere and give off that "how convenient" feeling.
Final thoughts: Highly recommended. Very interesting story and well told. Building tension was good and it led to a super exciting climax that I had to try hard to restrain myself from turning the pages too fast so that I could appreciate the artwork better.

If you're skeptical on whether or not you should pick this book up, you definitely should.
This is a really engrossing story. I follow Mark Crilley closely on YouTube and I love him and his artwork. I've read Akiko and Miki Falls before this and I can say that this is his best work on many levels. It's his best in terms of his artwork and as well as his storytelling. The book's got good characters, setting, and plot (with some nice twists). A critique of his past books would be that they feel too juvenile for an adult reader, but Brody's Ghost hits the "all ages" mark pretty accurately. If you're skeptical on whether or not you should pick this book up, you definitely should.

WOW! it is an impressive endeavor.
Mark Crilley is one of the artists I follow on his You Tube channel. He gives wonderful 'how to draw' tutorials and often refers to Brody's Ghost in many of them. I finally just had to see for myself and bought it. WOW! it is an impressive endeavor. 6 years in the making and finally all in one collection. The story concept is awesome as is the "acting" by the characters. It is very well drawn and Mr. Crilley pays great attention to the framing for drama, emotion, and movement. I am not even going to say anything about the story. Heck, I had to force myself to put it down several times so I could savor the story for a few days so I wouldn't finish it all in one day. Just look inside to see what it is about and give it a try.I previously bought Mr. Crilley' books The Realism Challenge and Mastering Manga 3 (There is also Mastering Manga 1 and 2.) If you like to draw, check them out as well.

Perfect length to a compelling story
I have long been a fan of Mark Crilley's (mainly following his YouTube Channel) and finally was able to pick up his Mastering Manga series, pre-ordered Manga Art and obviously Brody's Ghost. I have an interest in all of these things and I've learned a ton from Mark! That alone is reason to support his work, imo; however, I loved Brody's Ghost. I really liked the plot, I was interested the entire time and the layout/art was fantastic! What's more, rather than extending the series at the risk of the story, he tells it over six volumes. The twists caught me off gaurd and the big BAD reveal was awesome!

I loved this book
I loved this book! I had book one but to be honest I really wanted a bound book of the whole series. It was an amazing read that kept me on my toes. Usually I read the back of the book first (horrible I know >_<) But this had me going so much that I read straight through and finished it in a day! I love Marks creativeness, it wasn't a hollow story, and I loved the twist and turns. The character development was really awesome and I grew really close to Talia. It was nothing like I have ever read before....It's bound well and not to heavy, you also get to see all the artwork that had been in the previous sectioned books, great size and decent weight. Most Definitely worth five stars

Suspenseful
I bought the Kindle edition and read it on my Surface Pro 4. I enjoyed the story and it kept me wanting to read more. I normally prefer color on my comics, but black and white did not take away from the experience - and it's common for Japanese comics, which I also read. The criticism I would have is the relatively slow start but once it picks up, it doesn't let go. I highly recommend this book for light reading. The story is straightforward yet engaging.

Good product
Really enjoyed the book(s) from start to finish. I only noticed two writing discrepancies within the whole product which are the parts where Talia possesses Brody in the prison cell and the final pages where I assumed Brody was still a wanted man by the mafia/police.Overall, good product and I was surprised that throughout the whole books no one ever cursed which is unique to me.

Enjoyable in more ways than one
I bought this book to support Mark Crilley for the advice and entertainment from his YouTube channel. For a beginning artist such as myself the channel rocks. Brody's Ghost is very entertaining. I liked the plot twists and the story premise. I thought the story was well developed. I enjoyed the artwork and learned something about laying out drawings for impact.

A truly fabulous read!
I'm a big comic book fan. I've read books from Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, Vertigo, Image and IDW to name just a few of the bigger publishers, but this is probably the best comic book story I've ever read. The only stories which are as good are the Star Wars Quinlan Vos stories from John Ostrander, and Judge Dredd Days of Chaos by John Wagner and team.Firstly the story itself is brilliant - interesting with twists and turns which I didn't expect. It's about a young man who is heart-broken and down on his luck meeting a younger girl ghost who needs him to help her. It's kind of a supernatural, manga, martial arts love story set in a dystopian future.Secondly the way Crilley tells his story is really superb. There are so many comics which have great art and reasonably good stories but they jump across bits of the story from panel to panel which means you have read it a few times before you actually get what's going on. Crilley doesn't do this, he tells the story properly so you don't get lost. More than that he has a superb sense of timing. You can feel the beats in the story and the pacing is second to none. Nobody else out there does this as well as Crilley in my opinion.Thirdly, his art is excellent. He has a way of making it beautiful, interesting and really detailed without making things confusing or muddying the picture. Before reading this I have been reticent to read black and white comic books (I'm a total sucker for colour) but after the second page I began to love the black and white format. He does it really well. So, I would highly recommend this comic book to people who love comics and to people completely new to comics. In terms of suitablilty and audience I would say it's fine for everyone from 11 years to older adults. I think it's also a story which reads well for males and females. Stunning work!

A Mature Graphic Novel That Makes You Shiver In Delight
I've just re-read Brody's Ghost: The Collected Edition for a third time and I just felt compelled to write a review. It was even better the third time around if that's possible. This is truly a great story (regardless of genre) with interesting and deep characters you'll get to know and love. What is more, Brody's Ghost is very mature not only in its subject matter but in its story telling as well. It treats us as intelligent readers. I appreciate the way the author, Mark Crilley, lets some scenes play out entirely in images - with no text whatsoever. That way we are allowed to interpret the story and not be spoon-fed exposition.Mark Crilley has done something very special here. Many times you will find yourself totally immersed in the story, turning the page and just shiver in sheer delight when a turning point or a climax is reached. I got goose bumps and shivered at least twice this time around!I also like the art style: the black and white adds to the story and I don't think it would have been better in color. Perhaps some panels could've used some more polish though.I would recommend this to anyone and especially to those interested in futuristic, dystopian graphic novels about the supernatural.

Great art, but the writing let's it down.....
The art work, is fantastic.... but then again, I expected that from Mark....The story, is where sadly it breaks down... it runs along smoothly, then there's a twist as, we are introduced to new things, that seem too good to be true, but it helps get one of the main, characters off the hook!...Soooo not good, and it should have been handled much better...I'm a fan, of Marks art work... but his story writing skills, on this series aren't very good, unfortunately :(

Great Graphic Novel.
Brilliant graphic novel. Big fan of Mark's work on his YouTube channel, and the artwork he does which is definitely reflected in this book. Well worth the purchase if you have never read any of his Brody's Ghost before, as this copy gives you the entire collection in one book.
