can you wear contacts the morning after using this at night?

I don't totally know the answer- you may want to ask an optometrist, or any pharmacist should know. What i do know about the product is I put this in my eyes at night for dry eye caused by a CPAP machine. My cousin uses it differently for the same reason. She puts it on her eyelid and takes her finger and smooths it around her eyelid and eyelashes. In the morning I use systane cleansing wipes to wash any residue that is on my eyelids from the night before away. My eyeballs don't seem to have anything left in them in the morning so I would think there would be no reason you couldn't wear contacts. Unless there is some chemical in this lubricant that breaks down contacts and if there was wouldn't it be breaking down my eyeballs, too? I've been using this product for around 7 years and it is by far the best nighttime lubricant. The cleansing wipes you can forego or use about any brand but not the lubricant. My eyes feel a lot more relief from dry eye with this brand.

Can you apply the ointment and continue to stay up to read or should it be applied right before I sleep?

Apply this oint. Right before you sleep , or if you apply before because yoy feel your eyes dry , then you have to wait at least 30-40 minutes to return to your readings

This left a gooey residue around my eyes in the morning that has not come off with hot water on a washcloth. How do you clean off morning residue?

I am glad to help you! First of all, never use hot water on the face or body. It dries out the skin and down the road you could experience problems with your skin. I use barely warm water and I use CeraVe hydrating facial cleanser for normal to dry skin. This is a wonderful cleanser for everyone to use in the shower or sink. If you are using the sink to clean, I suggest you use barely warm water all over your face and neck, and use two to three pumps of cleanser and put it under the eye and over the eye. Gently wash with fingertips in a circular motion and rinse well and pat dry. If there is any residue left at all, I would take a wet washcloth and gently wipe under and over the eye, or you could take a cotton pad and use a toner that has no alcohol under and over the eye area. This product is very gentle, as I have rosacea and very very sensitive skin and this work wonderful for me! I hope this works well for you also, and I hope the eye product is working well too!!
