Is this model effective to remove occasional mats on a persian mix? doens't have the super long fur as a purebred..maybe 2 inches? very soft tho

No absolutely not! The clipper will jam with any mats. A #30 blade is a close shave and gets hot after a short use. It will stress out the motor to work on any mats. What you need for mats on a dog is a Skip Tooth blade on an A5 style professional clipper. Buy Andis or Wahl products. You get more choices with Wahl in the small/ medium clipper line. I would use Andis AGC, an A5 style clipper. With A5 style, all A5 blades will fit fine. Blade choices are plenty for A5's. Get the Geib Buttercup Blade pack (from Petedge). Geib blades cut smoothly. Do not use Andis blades. This pack has 4 blades: #30 close shave, #10 general fuzz cut, #7 close to the body crew cut, #5 crew cut. Larger blades sizes leave more hair. Higher sizes cut close to skin. Surgical cut is a #40 or 50, but #30 is pretty close to skin for wounds. #10 or #7 or #5 is great for a crew cut shave down on cat or dog. For mats you need a special blade called a Skip Tooth. It will slice right through the mat and works like aggressive sheep shears. #7 or #10 is a good Skip Tooth for Cats. For Dogs use #5 Skip Tooth - rougher. Cats have very fine sensitive skin. Best to use the Skip Tooth blade for just the matted areas, then use a #10 or #7 to shave the cat down completely for summer. Its good to let the skin breathe. Cats are nocturnal anyway, not much chance of sunburn. Give the cat a good shampoo bath too. The A5 style clippers are solidly built, and have power, and the most variety of blades for them. Do not get a cordless type, they are a pain. Most are made in China if not all, and the lithium battery in them don't hold a charge. The blades are useless too and jam frequently. Most cannot be fixed. Stick with Andis AGC II clipper and your choice of Geib or Sensei blades from Amazon or Petedge. The model listed here is good for paws, ears, poodle face, and delicate trims. It cannot take the heavy motor use of matted fur and may overheat for overall cat shave down. Use Silicone oil on blades during use, wiping off excess. Clean with sprays of rubbing alcohol, wipe off with paper towels, recoat with oil and store. Wahl also makes the BravMini cordless with $30 blade but its finicky and jams easily so best for very detailed work on Yorkie and Maltese paws and face only.

hope this isn't a stupid question...but what is the blade length? is it adjustable?

The blade is approx. 1.75 inches wide. The cutting edge is approx. 1/4" long. It is not adjustable.

How wide is the head/cutting area?

The head on mine is 1 1/2". I love it!

Is there a #10 blade for these?

It comes with #30 Trimmer Blade. Blade cannot be change. You may attach extra combs that come with it. They are small cut 3 mm and 6 mm, large cut 9 mm - 12 mm. I use this clipper for grooming face, feet, tail for my miniature poodle. This only trimmer that he doesn't mind when I groom him. It does not have loud noise.
