Q: Do you recommend buying an additional waterproof cover or will the one that comes with it be enough?

Aways have a spare one. You will need to line dry the cover that comes with it, but when kids are sick they can puke for several days (sometimes couple times a day)

Didn’t happen to me I washed immediately after purchase. I would contact babyletto!

Q: Can I use a mattress protector on top of this?

You can but I don’t believe it is necessary as the cover included is removable and washable.
