Want to put them in emergency kits (car, camp, pack, bug out bag) and want to know if they'll stay any fresher, or last longer if I vacuumed sealed?

Vacuum sealing will not extend storage life as the cyalume chemical is already sealed in an air tight tube which prevents leakage and exposure to air. Temperature is a much more important factor. Heat will decrease their shelf life so I'd consider storing them in a cool place.

Would it be safe to put in water bottle (that I drink out of)? Easier to find at night.

Manufacturer says that they only last a year if not in the foil package, versus 4 to 5 years in the foil. This implies some gas or vapor is leaking out of after it's out of the foil package. Most gases would condense in contact with water, so you would drink it, whatever it is. I wouldn't.

Can these really be used as a light source in the dark? I mean can you see other things in its light?

Yes. They are perfect for changing a tire in darkness. I used three additional lights for safety, collision avoidance behind my vehicle while on a dark road to change a tire. They are very bright at first, but the time the light continues to illuminate is not as advertised. The brightness begins to deteriorate after a few hours. They do continue to emit illumination, but after 6 hours you will not be able to do very much. After 8 hours they are almost out. They work great for power outages. The 20 pack is good if the power is out more than 6 hours. You can attach these to kids who are out in the dark (Trick or Treat) or to enhance any costumes. I recommend the 20 pack. Keep a few in your vehicles, garage, and one in each room of your home. They have a shelf life. I received mine in 2013 and they expire in 2017. I do not know how long they sat in storage prior to delivery. Check the expiration date if you get them to make sure they are not about or already expired. If so, send them back. Good luck.

Can I remove these from the wrapper to save space in my edc bag? The plastic wrapper easily adds a few inches to the length of the stick.

Don't remove the wrapper until you intend to activate the stick. The wrapper the stick is in, protects it, literally keeps it 'fresh' - the stick will degrade (unsnapped) faster & sooner, if the wrapper is even damaged. What would actually be best if packing them in an EDC or BOB - is a hard case for the sticks (still wrapped!) so other items don't tear or puncture the wrapper.
