Is this the exact same model as the keyboard only version on Amazon that is over 30 bucks. Seems cheaper to buy the keyboard and mouse!!

If you want to upgrade your mouse to the better logitech M510, do NOT buy this set. This keyboard is incompatible with the M510. This keyboard does NOT have the Unifying receiver ... which is the only way to go. I made this mistake, and ended up having to buy a new Unifying Keyboard to work with the same receiver as my M510 mouse. So I wasted my money with this because I didn't know this. "Smart" marketing ploy buy logitech for you to have to buy another keyboard.

Does the mouse use a ball for tracking or a laser?

I have used several different models of these Logitech keyboards and mice, from MK270 through MK520. They all had a device that emits a focused light beam, like a laser, just not through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation, which a general description of a laser. The difference is immaterial in the mouse as far as I can determine. These "otical source" mice have enough resolution to do HD graphics work. They work far better than the first lasers did, in fact.

does this warn you when cap lock is on

I guess so. In Word Perfect there's a little box at the bottom of the window with AB on it. When you press the Cap Lock, it indents. When you press it again it pops up. There's no bells or anything like that. And this is on my wife's Vista machine.
