The distance is 5-1/4" not 5-3/4" like Dustican said

How easily does this rotate from landscape to portrait and back? Does it hold position (vertical/horizontal) or does it tend to waver off plum?

It's technically works, but is poorly designed in this regard. How easily it stays really depends on your bracket position. If it's vertically in the center of your tv/monitor (not high or low, but in the center) it stays easily in the portrait position. Mine is off-center too high. I had to crank down that bolt pretty hard to get it to stay. Getting an adjustable wrench in their is tough without removing the tv/monitor, and you can forget getting a socket wrench in there. It also loosens again when you rotate it back to landscape. They could have used a different type washer, or maybe a locking wheel bearing of some kind. The tilt is also associated with the wrong bracket so you lose the up/down tilt, i.e. it becomes a left-to-right tilt which you already have with the arm swivel.

Do I have to use a tool to tilt the tv every single time? I want to push the tv as flat as possible when not in use
