Under the Bonnet: Confessions of a 1970s and '80s Car Mechanic

Having been in the trade during the years covered by this book it certainly brought back a few memories. Written a very candid style it's just like it was (and probably still is some places). A great read for classic car fans.

This is the third of Brian's books that I've read (Ferdy Murphy's Coat and Erpingham, Hero of Norfolk being the others). All are very different, all well written, and in this case an amusing look back at the cars and motor trade of the 70's). As he says, this isn't about the prestige cars that other have probably written about, this is about the bangers, the rust heaps that most of us of a certain age remember.A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Much better than I anticipated. Well written and gives an inside view of dealing with some old-fashioned (1970s, 80s) car maintenance that some of us can relate to, and the 'scam' that is the car manufacturing, retail, and servicing industry of today.

I am a bit older than the author of this book but as my father explained the workings of the internal combustion engine on the back of a cigarette packet, I suppose I was doomed to do a lot of DIY mechanics.This book reveals very amusingly pretty much every problem Ive had with a car, even cutting out the roof of a. Some amusing and interesting bits in the book, but I couldn't follow the timeline.It just seemed like a load of random tales. Maybe that was the idea but it was lost on me. Sorry.

Got this for my Husband of a certain age for Christmas, he loved it !!!!!

Good read brought back memories

A hugely enjoyable and honest read. If like me, you were a child of the ‘70’s you will remember the days when people tinkered about with their cars at the weekend. It would never be strange to leave the house and pass by the legs of my father or brother sticking out from beneath a car. I never cared what shape a car was in, so long as it moved and someone was willing to drive. Well written and entertaining, with no personal interest or knowledge of what goes on under a bonnet, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
