My Little Pony: Under the Sparkling Sea

Pretty good
Under the Sparkling Sea was an interesting read with the sea horses slant. Basically, Twilight (unicorn twilight) gets a letter from King Leo, the king of Aquastria (underwater Equestria) asking her if she wants to come to see the Annual Aquastrian Race. She can bring whoever she likes so she (obviously) brings all her friends and Spike. She casts a spell that gives them all fins and gills except Spike (won't work on dragons) who gets a glass bubble helmet. They go down there on a manta hawk (manta ray + hawk) and mingle. They get along with the sea ponies well and learn about new creatures like the Crabbit and Jellyflies, and even make a new friend named Nar Wally. The other contenders in the race, the mermares, like to keep to themselves though. Due to an accident, Rainbow Dash is elected to represent the sea ponies in the most difficult part of the race (the race is in sections with a different pony doing a different part) through Crabbit's Claw Cave. I won't spoil the end for you.The book is 37 pages (from the page the story itself starts) and FULLY illustrated. There are pictures on every single page. The pictures take up more space than the words do! There's a also a two-sided pull out poster inside. Also, the art style doesn't look like the show at all, but it's not a bad thing. It looked strange at first but after awhile I grew to like it.So yeah, to sum it up. Short book, fully illustrated, interesting theme, free poster, doesn't look like the show's art style (your choice if this is a good or bad thing). I'd recommend any brony to read this.

A beautiful book with a terrific message
I bought this for my little girl's 4th birthday and can't wait to give it to her. She's sitting next to me as I write this review, in fact, watching a My Little Pony episode... She is in LOVE with them all, especially Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia. :)The artwork in this book is really stunning and it simply GLOWS. If you're curious what it will look like (like I was before I purchased), you can search Google Images for "Mary Jane Begin My Little Pony" and you can decide from there if you like the look the illustrator captured. Personally, I love it.As important for me is the message of the book. I tend to steer clear of lame, self-centered story lines. For those who want to remain spoiler-free, I will say that the story of friendship in this book is better than most of the TV episodes I've seen. (For those who don't mind a slight spoiler, see below for more details.)I wasn't sure if I really wanted to spend $13 on this item, since I could have gotten two or three early reader books for the same price, but I am delighted by this purchase and am very happy I took the plunge.I'd give this book 6 stars if I could. I hope you love it as much as I do!___________________________________________________STORYLINE SPOILER:The main message is that helping someone in need (specifically someone who's been hurt) is more important than winning a race. My almost 4 year old is very competitive and I think this message is just what she needs.

A cute story with gorgeous art. Seriously tempted to cut out the pages just for some of the art!

This book has really pretty artwork. The story was sweet but my five year old and myself wished there was more "story" to it. Think she just wanted it to last longer. Great addition to any pony lover, though. We enjoyed it. It was great to see a different pony world.

Fantastic, whimsical pony artwork
Yes, this is a children's book about My Little Ponies, and as such the plot and writing are juvenile in nature. But the artwork is ASTOUNDING, especially for subjects based off a mass marketed toy line. The artist had generously posted preview, sample images from this book online before it was released which made me put it in the "must buy" category. Its not the typical My Little Pony artwork, and its beautiful and detailed enough that even adults can enjoy it. I don't normally collect My Little Pony books for this reason--terrible artwork. Also included is a small mini poster featuring some of the same artwork.I hope that the illustrator of this book continues to make more My Little Pony books with this art style, as I'd love to more of this lovely pony based artwork.

So pretty!
Don't get it on Kindle! Get it in hardcover! It is so pretty that you will want to have it on your coffee table. The illustrations aren't cartoonish, but painterly, with lovely iridescent tones everywhere. Fans of the old, old show will be amused by this new take on sea ponies. I hope the artist does more of these, but from what I've seen of her process, she is very painstaking and takes a long time to create her artwork. If she does do another, I will preorder it as soon as I can.

Expanding the MLP World
This is definitely a book targeted at the younger audience for this series, so if you're a parent looking for a My Little Pony book to buy for your child I'd say it's a great choice. The pages are full of beautifully coloured images and show many of the sea creatures that fans of the older series have been curious about turning up in Friendship is Magic. The style is very reminiscent of the classic "G1" MLP style, so if that isn't your sort of thing you might not enjoy this book, but otherwise I think it's worth giving a go.

It's certainly unique, but ultimately meaningless
This book introduces sea ponies and mermares to the FiM canon, along with a slew of other things, but from a story perspective, it has absolutely no effect on the series at all, largely because the plot is minimal, and the characters and creatures introduced are never seen or mentioned again. The art is probably the most interesting thing about this book. The characters are slightly less anthropomorphized, which makes them look...different, for lack of a better word, but the backgrounds are nice and some of the designs are fun. I have a hard time recommending this book to other Bronies, but it might be an ok bedtime story book for children. If you are a Brony thinking of checking it out, I would only recommend it if you're looking for something unique in the FiM series that also serves as a good conversation catalyst.
