Soft Arkansas (Medium): This is used to establish and maintain a sharp edge on cutting tools. Since this is a natural stone colors may include Grey, White, Black/Grey, Grey/Pink, Black/White, White or White/Pink, or a combination of these colors. Genuine Arkansas stones are 100% quarried in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. They are highly sought after worldwide for their superior ability to sharpen knives and woodworking tools, as well as to put quality edges on a wide variety of instruments Arkansas Novaculite stones produce these fine edges s with less wear on your blade than manmade stones. Dan's Arkansas Stones are classified as Novaculite, which is extremely hard and fine grained crystalline structure rock containing almost pure silica. These stones are classified in 4 grades and progress from Soft to Hard to Translucent and finally to Black. Each grade is based on the specific gravity or density of the mineral and not the grit or particle size. The grades with more dense or tightly packed particles will produce a finer or sharper edge. In addition, stone grades are not determined by color, as color alone will not differentiate the hardness of different stone grades. Each grade may contain any of the following colors: black, charcoal, grey, white, multi-color, brown, pink or red, or a combination of these colors in a single stone. These stones come in a leather pouch to protect them when not in use. All Arkansas stones work best with a light mineral honing oil to suspend the metal particles produced by the sharpening process which prevents clogging of the pores of the stone.

Decent stone.
It is a cheap sharpening stone, it works for the price.

Good little stone. Put a nice edge on a few of my knives with it. Keep it lubed so it doesn't clog up and don't drop it on any hard surfaces like a garage floor and it should last for years.

Didn’t know what sharp was til I used this
Had never used a whetstone before and mostly bought it for decoration on another project. When it came time to use it, I followed the included instructions, and it was SUPER easy, not to mention, it was RAZOR sharp. I typically test the sharpness by running my finger very lightly and slowly across the front of the blade edge (which is very very stupid, never do that) but when I did it with this I instantly withdrew my hang and thought “yeah, if I do that this is gonna be a cut for sure”. This thing really does the job and I guess I should really expect to take this seriously and not mess around with it, but it’s crazy. Didn’t know what a sharp knife was until I used this.(They recommend you use knife sharpening lubricant, but I just used water and it worked out great, but I’m sure with the proper materials, it’s an unbelievable edge. The sheath it comes with is a light cream color unlike the pictures here, but I used brown leather dye I already had to color it, which you can do yourself as well. but it wasn’t really necessary. If you have leather dye already, it’s a nice touch, but I wouldn’t spend $10 on leather dye for one tiny little pouch.)

Very nice, but small
First Arkansas stone I’ve bought. The quality is great, looks great. Bought some Dan’s honing oil to go with it. Never used natural stone to sharpen knives before, but I’m hooked. Love it. The only downside is the size, should have bought at least a 6”x2”. The size is listed, still I didn’t realize just how tiny it’d be for knife sharpening. 1/4” x1” x3” is just too small for some knives. However it is intended to be used as a pocket stone, just something to touch up your blade on the go. It’s on the thinner side, might break in my pocket. Might just keep it in the truck, and buy a larger stone for home sharpening. Still not bad for a first Arkansas stone, great if you want to dip your feet in.

Sharp!
I have had this for a year. It does the job. I keep it in my pocket. I use my knife a lot. If I need to sharpen it I pull it out of my pocket to hone my knife back up. I live the case not only for storage but I also use the leather case to strop my pocket knife.

Highy recommended !!!!!
As stated in another review, you dont know sharp untill youve used this stone. I work in an industrial environment that requires me to always have a sharp blade. This stone is a perfect pocket companion. Easy to use and easy to hold. Once a week i clean it with wd40 and a tooth brush. I keep the inside of the leather case lightly oiled and all is fine. May pick up a few more for coworkers this holiday season! Thank you!

Sharpening stone
My only problem is it’s very small was expecting a larger stone probably didn’t look at the size or I wouldn’t have ordered it
