Death in Big Bend

Very interesting and informative book
the author does an excellent job at painting a picture of exactly how these situations came to be, and how they could’ve been avoided by each of the subjects that they look at.

Should be titled "What not to do while in Big Bend National Park"
BBNP intrigues me greatly. I had to get this book after visiting the park and also talking to a Texan who recommended it. ****Get a map of Big Bend and keep it with you when reading, it will make it twice as fun and more easy to follow the stories!**** I enjoyed the writing style, very direct and to the point. There were definitely some sad and scary stories in the book, but for the most part, I think it serves as an interesting way to write a survival guide for the park. I read the book in three days, which is light-speed for me, so if BBNP interests you, I'm sure you will not be able to put it down either.

Many details but I appreciated them.
It was an excellent read. As other reviews stated, the writer adds a large amount of detail. It can be a bit overwhelming but there were some stories in this book that were so interesting, I wanted every last bit of info. It made it possible to actually visualize the situations in great detail. Another thing that made me appreciate the amount of details is the fact that you can not find most of these stories online or in news articles anymore. Greatly appreciated and it was interesting enough that my girlfriend and I read the entire thing together while driving back and forth from Big Bend. By the time we got there, we were already planning on looking for certain areas that are described in the book. That may be a little too morbid for some people but I doubt it’s too morbid for someone reading a review for a book about death at a national park. Great book, I bought a copy for my parents who live in Alpine. They loved it too!

Like a Police Report
This book is very factual. Interesting, but a bit dry.

Big Bend
Interesting and well written book but only on relatively recent deaths. Wanting more about late 1800s through 1950s

Highly informative.
Bought this as a reference of what one should be aware of to avoid hiking mishaps.

I'm not a big reader but when I knew my upcoming trip to Big Bend was approaching and I would be without internet I found myself looking around for something to read. This book was highly recommended many times in different online groups I'm apart of so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. As others have said the book is very detailed and reads exceptionally well. I finished by night two on my journey and wanted more. My family spent the entire trip listening to me talk about it. Thanks for the great read!

Heed the signs…and Good Luck.
Very good read. I just started visiting the park last year but have been there 3 times since, with another trip planned later this year.Ever since my first visit I have been intrigued by Big Bend and the communities surrounding the park. All my experiences there have been great. Reading this book made me think a lot more about being prepared and cautious. While I have not been on some of the more treacherous trails described in some of the incidents in this book, I’ve been there in both summer and winter and have seen both extremes in weather. The book was very well written. Each incident was meticulously described. The author collaborated facts with many sources. I found the descriptions almost vivid which made up for no pictures in the book. Some ending on a happy note, some not.I plan on returning to Big Bend regularly and I think this book could be a life saver.

Very important for people who are new to desert hiking to understand.
Excellent book for anyone thinking that a walk in the park, is just a "walk in the park!" !!! Information for city people! Don't forget to read the warning signs y'all ! ;-)
