Standing on the Shoulders of Legends
Nowadays I actually want to listen to Vertigo more than to the first Black Sabbath album. Well, partly that is because I listened to Black Sabbath over and over again when I was a teen back in the 70s and I've listened several times over the years since then too. So, I'm a little over exposed to the original album. However, there is much that is arguably better about this cover of Black Sabbath's first record. First off is the sonics. Vertigo sounds better. Recording technology has improved since 1970. Also, heavy metal was a new thing at the time, so ideas for how to best capture that style in a recording were only just being tried out. Lastly, Black Sabbath was an untried, new, group at the time and probably had limited studio time to work with.Along comes Zakk Wylde and his buddies. They obviously love this music. And, they have the advantage of standing on Black Sabbath's shoulders so to speak. They have been able to listen to this album their whole lives and improve it in their heads the way that musicians do. They got to hear how Black Sabbath themselves improved their playing of these songs in live concerts over the years. So, there are improvements also in the musical performances of these songs in addition to the sonic improvements in recording.Does this take away from the original Black Sabbath album? I don't think so. I prefer young Ozzy's vocals and Bill Ward's drums, although it would have been nice to hear them miked up and mixed like the drums are on Vertigo. Also, there is something pleasant about the "vintage" aspects of the original album. The original album allows for more quiet and "space" at times than today's heavy metal allows. It is the priceless sound of an era.I am a Black Sabbath fan. But I have no problem with the idea of another musician playing new versions of old songs by other artists and tweaking them. In every serious genre of music this is absolutely normal, so why not in metal? I just hope that Black Sabbath get their share of whatever royalties they deserve for each purchase of Vertigo. This new tribute, cover, or whatever you call, it simply rocks. It has great sound, great playing, great new ideas AND they are great songs.

Best Black Sabbath cover band in the world.
It’s a big buffed sounding cover of Sabbath’s 1st record. U can’t go wrong when Mr. Zakk Wylde & his great creativity are playing those classics, he’s one of the best hard Rock & Metal guitar players in the business, barré none!

Much better than I expected...
Saw this a few months back and evidently Amazon was out of stock, so like with anything also that becomes hard to get the sharks were in the water smelling blood especially since this is a physical only release and $50 + for a cover cd of one of my favorite bands of all time was not going to happen. Thankfully, it is back in stock here at a fair price...so I pulled the trigger:As I stated before, to me, there are some bands that you shouldn't attempt to cover and BS is one of the "top of the lists" for me in that regard and the fact that Zakk played with Oxzy and that I've been to concerts where Zakk does these songs with Ozzy changed none of my hesitancies about him doing this or me liking it whatsoever.....Gave all that "backstory" to be able to say this: this is a REALLY good cd and Zakk and crew do an excellent job. No, I dont believe it's better than the original versions but they brought it here convincingly enough to where I didn't care...that's an accomplishment. Hopefully this helped in your purchasing decision.

Awesome, but is the CD/DVD/Book package worth the price?
Above are a couple of stills from the DVD. I can't figure out whether to give this 3 stars or 5. If I would go only off of the album and the DVD, it's easily 5 stars. The bands gives awesome insight into recording the album. As well as there insight into the the original. Ozzy makes an appearance. Henry Rollins is also on hand to talk about how badass Sabbath is. It's awesome. The 3 stars of this package is the sparseness of the DVD. (First photo) There is no menu or subtitles. For $40, I would expect more on the DVD. For $40, this should have been a blu ray, with a Zakk Sabbath show on it. If not the blu ray, at least something else on the DVD. There is the photo book. It's pretty cool, but I would much rather have more CD and DVD content.Unless you really, really want to see the behind the scenes DVD, you could save some money and get the CD only.

Better covers have been here but not a whole album! at times i'm not sure if Ozzy is not singing and rest of black sabbath isnt playing.I've rarly said this but this is so close to the original it's almost equal but that not quite possible considering the original is 45 years old! I purchased a live cd of zack sabbath and he dose his best with other BS track live just as good.buy it!
