Xcelite99PS50 13-piece Series 99 Compact Screwdriver and Nutdriver Set

I'm very surprised to be writing this review. I purchased this based on the positive reviews left by others. As it turns out, the other reviewers here do not know what to expect in terms of quality from a nearly $90 hand driver. I have 3 issues with this product, and I'll list them from least to greatest, including pictures of said issues. My first and most minor issue is that the handle is not solid acetate/plastic, but is actually hollow it's whole length. This gives it a very light and cheap feel (don't drop it from high up), and will allow dirt and grease to enter into the handle over time. My next two issues are significantly worse then the first, but are equally unacceptable to each other at this price point. The bits are cheaply made and poorly machined. A couple of mine have visible warping on them right out of the box, including one clearly damaged by the flanges. They also do not fit into the handle the same, making the poor machining very apparent. Lastly, ALL of the bits wobble back and forth significantly when inserted into the handle. It is not a snug and sturdy fit. If it wobbles like this out of the box, how long do you think it will hold up under heavy use? This is absolutely unacceptable for a hand driver at this price point. I will not be returning this, as I'm now very curious to see how long it will last - I can still drop my rating another star. (as I'm certain the idea of being able to pass this down to your grandchildren, like one of the other reviewers suggested, is extremely laughable). This is not a reflection on the seller kimco, but rather the maker of the tool, xcelite. Cheap Chinese junk at a premium price point. Don't forget to look at the pictures showing some of my issues with this product. (Update, dropped to one star - the flatheads had bent within their first few light duty uses indicating extremely low grade steel is being used. You will receive a much higher quality product by purchasing the cheapest hand driver you can find at Menards, what a shame).

The tools are exceptionally fine. I use my set daily. I have purchased other Xcelite sets, like their allen wrenches. Superb.But the plastic case is a poor design. In my years-old set, every time I open it up, several of the tools fall out of their snap-in plastic holders. It's never obvious how or where the handle and the extension should fit, so I do a bit of trial-and-error whenever it's time to close up the set. It's a wonder to me that Xcelite hasn't re-designed this case over the years. They once were kind enough to mail me a replacement case, no charge; but the replacement has also become problematic.

I was just curious to determine the value of what I suspected would be a 'vintage' item. Surprise, this fine product is still available! I purchased my set about 1970 - back when they came in a flexible vinyl case. This is real quality design and construction. It IS amazing that I have not lost any of the pieces as well. It has come in handy sooooo many times particularly when I'm not sure which tools I'm going to need e.g. assembling something from China - out of the box. Just grab this set and maybe a set of allen wrenches and you're ready to work away from your work bench or large tool box.
