"SPAM" The other red meat.
This stuff is yummy in the tummy. Get some. It tastes like bacon. I'm glad I am not a Muslim because they probably can't eat this stuff. That is a good thing. That leaves more for me. Ha ha. I have this set up on the automatic order system through Amazon.com That makes the price a dollar or two cheaper. It also makes it convenient for me so that I can keep my canned goods rotating. Instead of ordering or purchasing large quantities that all have the same expiration date on them I will keep getting new stock with fresh dates on them. I have my system set up for every two months so I will get 6 fresh cans at a time. This is just one of the ways that I am staying prepared for emergencies. Don't get caught with your pantry empty. History could repeat itself so do some little things to help make sure that you will have a little food stored for the unexpected. By the way I slice this up and fry it in the skillet. It really does smell and taste like bacon. I think I bought some at Sam's Club once but when I went back for more they did not have it. Wal-Mart didn't have it either. What I do is open the can and extract the meat from inside carefully. I make at least 8 equal slices. Thinner is better but I find that I like uniformity in my slice. I spray the skillet lightly with some non stick spray. Turn the burner on high and wait a minute or two for it to get hot. Place the slices in the pan for 4 or 5 minutes and turn the heat back to medium high. Flip them over and brown both side. If either side isn't uniformly brown flip again until it is just right. Cooking them this way will reduce the fat content a little. It adds a lightly crisp texture and a cooked meat flavor. I like to eat them just like that out of the pan. I also like to put two slices between bread with a little mustard.

A MUST HAVE for any camping trip or survival kit.
This IS bacon... smells like bacon, tastes like bacon, but without the shelf-life or cooking requirements of bacon. Get one of those cheeze-slicers, with the tight metal wire between the two forked ends. Keep that with you to slice the spam (once removed whole from the can) into very thin strips. Throw on a hot pan (no oil or butter) and crisp it up, flipping it every minute or two just like cooking bacon.... If bacon and potato chips had a baby... this would be the end result. Such a great treat! And no... doing this with regular spam falls very short of this experience, in my opinion. Bacon Spam is the ONLY thing to stock.

Buy for your Bug Out Bag
Bought this for my Earthquake Kit since it has a LONG shelf life. It's SUPER salty which is horribly unhealthy. They do make a low sodium version but this Bacon one tastes better. I think it is disgusting raw straight out of the can. My dog likes it that way but I find the texture gross. But I have to admit that it tastes good when you fry it crispy and add it to something plain like rice, or a veggie stir fry or scrambled eggs. I first learned about SPAM in Oahu when my Hawaiian friend took me to a fast food spam place. They offered about 20 different preparations of Spam. The locals were lined up down the block and were gobbling up Fried spam on sticky rice like it was a delicacy. Anyway, I have SPAM, tuna, sardines, canned salmon & vienna sausages along with a few Mountain House meals in my emergency kit. BTW, I had no problem with dents ordering via Amazon. Arrived in perfect condition.

How can you not like spam?
Okay, so it's not exactly healthy for you but it is affordable, delicious, versatile, and the shelf life really helps for us single guys living on a budget. I keep at least a few cans for those just in case days. Try some of these uses: -Spam Musubi: seawead, rice, terikyaki sauce, and spam. Roll it up like square sushi. Dip it in sirachi/teriyaki sauce. I think it tastes better with thinner 1/4 inch spam slices seared on both sides but that is a matter of preference. -In place of bacon: The name really stands true but you have to cook it much longer to get that bacon flavor. Cut it really really think (like 1/8 inch) and cover it on a medium fire. Once the fat burns out it will cook a lot faster. Wait until it gets crispy. -Fried rice: If you slice it into thin half inch squares you can use it for fried rice. Use day old cooked rice so it doesn't clump together. Reheat the rice in the pan and put some soy sauce in there. In a separate pan cook some vegetables, the spam, and scrambled eggs last. Throw the eggs and other ingredients in with the rice when the eggs are still runny. Add some salt and pepper for taste and you have yourself a meal. Hope this gives you some ideas :)

It is filling and tasts good.
I have an adult son who will at times eat nothing else. I love the flavor and enjoy that it doesn't take several hours to prepare and serve, It is also quite flexible when it comes to what you can serve with it; soup, make a sandwich, salad, beans, eggs, etc. There seems to be a feeling in the general public that "Spam" is bad for you. During World War II, England almost lived on it, I have been eating it most of my adult life which is a little more than 60 years, and I am still working properly, so I am sure that that rumor is not holding water. I see that this is part of the Hormel Foods Group, I eat a lot of Hormel products and I find them to be quite adequate. Patrick J. Walters
