One of Stallone's unsung bests!
I hit a point a few years ago where I was bored with all the films I had because I was looking for something to watch in my spare time; old/new that was something else and I kept thinking of Sylvester Stallone. He is best known for Rocky and Rambo. I also loved him in Escape to Victory, Copland and Demolition Man.Then he has done some god awful films like Stop or my mom will shoot, Cobra, Judge Dredd etc. It hit me then that there must have been films he had done that were at least well received critically but didn't make a lot of money (hence became very forgotten films). Therefore I came across this. I saw what the film was about and thought this is nothing like I see Stallone in before so just had to watch it.Originally written as an idea for The Frence Connection III but Gene Hackman turning down the chance to come back as Popeye Doyle. So it was re-written and made for Stallone playing officer Da Silva long with Billy Dee Williams (as his partner) which made them a good pairing.Ruther Haugher as the terrorist (villian), he was just remarkable and an absolute scene stealer.Stallone has mentioned that this film would have been even better if Universal hadn't torn it to pieces. There was meant to be extra scenes which dissapoints me really because I loved this film but if I had one bad thing to say about it is that it could have had more added to it.Nonetheless I fully recommend this to any Stallone fans as unlike any of the bad movies he has done; this is not cheesy at all but dark and gritty the way it should be.

One of Stallone's better pre Rambo attempts.
This one is just so much fun.Stallone plays a cop who seemingly spends most of his professional life entrapping muggers whilst cross dressed. He’s recruited (along with Billy Dee Williams) to tackle terrorists played (very well) by Hauer and Khambatta. It’s hardly a genre classic, but it moves along at pace, the cast are uniformly good value, it’s well shot and consistently engaging.Great of it’s time music by Keith Emerson too.The HD version offered by Prime is superior to the DVD discs of the title that have been available in the U.K previously.

Away from Balboa and Rambo, the great mans finest hour, finally on Blu-Ray with the original soundtrack reinstated in the classic nightclub scene.

hauer, stallone, billy dee williams, spinell = classic
Nighthawks actually isn't that well known which is criminal. This movie is one of the finest cop thrillers of a generation. Excellent direction, excellent cast, excellent script, excellent soundtrack it has it all.First off Stallone is picture perfect in this movie, and proves that old Rocky CAN ACT. The beard and hat and not caring too much about his girlfriend, Stallone reeks of New York he is New York. His partner Billy Dee Williams is subtle but great. Their liet played by the brillant Joe Spinell is also spot on, especially with his memorable 'understand this sucker' to Stallone. And then there is Rutger Hauer as the terrorist, this may well be Hauer's greatest performance as a villian well at least on a par with Roy Batty from Blade Runner and The Hitcher performance. He is quite literally unstoppable.Real locations also help, London, Paris and New York. The movie works so well and shows New York as it was at the turn of the 1980's. I cannot speak highly enough about this movie, if you like these type of films go and get it because it's up there with the absolute best of them.

An excellant police thriller!
Sylvester Stallone stars as New York City cop Deke DaSilva and Rutger Hauer stars as his terrorist adversary Wulfgar in this fantastic early 80's police thriller. If you are a fan of Sylvester Stallone then this film is highly recommended, although some fans might have to take a while to adjust to seeing him with a full beard. The film features a good number of tense and exciting action sequences, such as: The opening sequence where DaSilva foils a mugging, a shootout in a disco, a chase through a subway tunnel and onto a subway train and the spectacular ending. The DVD itself is in widescreen and the picture quality has obviously been cleaned up slighlty since the previous release. The only negative thing about this DVD is that it does not feature the original songs used in the disco where DaSilva finds Wulfgar. Aside from that fact, if you want to see Nighthawks in widescreen then this is the DVD to get.

What happened to the original disco music?!!!
One of my fave films of the early eighties,I Recently decidedto buy the dvd only to find that the two disco songs,One beingBrown sugar by the rolling stones and i don,t know the name ofthe other one,But it was good anyway!are missing from the dvd!,They have been replaced by two not(in my opinion)as good songs!,It kinda ruined it for me a bit!,As i had watched this film afair few times on vhs in its original format!.Surely someone else has noticed this!!If watched for the first time on dvd you won,t notice thedifference! But believe me if you watch an old vhs of the filmyou will definetly notice the difference!!This is why i am giving four stars instead of five!
