A reliable coursebook.
I've just finished the A1 level book and will be moving onto level A2. It's taken me from the very beginner level to a basic conversational level.Positives:~ great (mostly) interesting content, perhaps slightly more appropriate for slightly older age groups (by that I mean not for children). This is purely because of the selection of topics.~good pacing with interesting clearly laid out topics for learning broken down into grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking practice.~ nice images, and engaging layout~great accompanying materials including a practice boook, a variety of audio material and videosCons~the layout in terms of order can be confusing. Finding exercises, audio material, and videos appropriate for each class can be problematic and the book overrelies on the already out of date cd / dvd format which maybe inaccessible to some "in one place" as many laptops don't have a CD / DVD Player any more. Streaming would be better.~ the audio is on the CD, the videos on DVD. It's very confusing. And time consuming.~it's a coursebook and best used with a tutor as many exercises are meant to be interactive rather than designed for self study. It's a book for people who want to learn German as a foreign language rather than "German for tourists" so something to bear in mind. It very much depends on what, and how you want to learn. It's a "German only" book. There are no explanations in English.I covered it with a tutor in just under a year with about one hour a week. But I can hold simple conversations on a range of topics in line with the A1 requirements. I've also learned a bit about the German culture.

Useful but a bit complicated
In general, I am happy with this book but as a beginner of the German language it can be challenging as nearly all if not all of the words in the book are in German. This is not exactly convenient. Overall, it is generally a good book to learn German.

Attractive book, good content but not for solo learners
My comments for the workbook also apply to the course book. It is NOT appropriate for a solo learner, only if you have a teacher. On the plus side, the book is attractive and well-presented and the content seems practical and to progress logically (I have only just started so it's early days). But there are no explanations, and everything is in German so it's a bit of a challenge for a complete beginner like me - without a teacher it would be impossible. There are no answers at the back of the book, and no transcripts of any audio material, so again without a teacher you are stuck. A big problem I have is that the DVD rom won't install so at the moment I can't access any of the material on it. My teacher said she had the same problem with her copy. I have contacted the publishers and am waiting to see what they suggest.
