Messograf Caliper Pen
The pen is functional. Excellent tool for quick measurement and taking short notes. This is not the caliper to make precise measurements while designing something and is not a substitute for real high precision tools. The pen is not a substitute for a real pen as well, as it's heavy for such a task and not very convinient to hold. I use it it for what I described above and I'm really happy with it. The pen makes an excellent gift as well. If I need, I'll buy it again and I recommend it to my friends as well. The pen is more for engineering inclined and/or for inventor type of minds and people. A normel ;-) and ordinary person will not aporeciate its value. No offence for anyone, just my own observation.

as a part of a gift for being my best man. I also purchased one for myself
I purchased this for my brother, who is an engineer, as a part of a gift for being my best man. I also purchased one for myself. We both think the pen is very unique and and the measurement too is very useful. Since it is made almost entirely of metal the pen has some weight to it and the shape feels good in your hand. My brother loves the pen and so do I. 5/5

What you would expect from the Germans
This is awesome and I get why it's an legendary pen tool. The build and finish are beautiful. I sort of doubt I will use the pen portion of this, but the caliper is great. It features cm and inch scale. The inside measure requires adding 4mm to the scale reading. The top of the slider features set of ten lines marking 0.9mm spaces. This allows 0.1mm increment measure by finding the mark line on top that best matches with a mark on the main scale and the position gives the tenth mm measure. So if the main marker is between 20mm and 21mm and the 7th line on top matches best with a line on the main scale, then the gap is measured at 20.7mm. Clever system.

Feels like a $3 pen
Over priced for how cheap it feels. The pen doesn't write well and even though it says it's all metal it feels like plastic. Also the marking should have been filled with black to make it easier to read.

A fun and handy pen
It seems to be well made although the clicker mechanism can be a little sticky; removing it and spraying with a little WD-40 clears it up for a while. Not a terribly comfortable pen to write with because of its oblong cross-section shape and sticks up a fair amount in your pocket (hence the 4* instead of 5*) but the pen writes very smoothly. The ruler/vernier can be very handy and operates smoothly. The tire depth gauge is easy to use, but the screw/bolt thread indicator is still a mystery to me and written-or at least abbreviated-in German. All in all I like the pen a lot but then I am an inveterate (not 'invertebrate' as my spell-check would have it) gadgeteer so you need to keep that in mind. The actual seller, Passion4Pens, was great! His phone lines were down due to the many mid-west storms and fulfilled the order at the local coffee shop. Highly recommended!

For the Discerning Dork
It's a cute idea, but really more of a novelty or joke gift than anything practical. If you want precision beyond eyeballing the marks between the millimeters, you're better off going with Mitutoyo or whatever caliper's your poison. The depth gauge, while meant for tire treads, does give it a little bit of an edge over cheap analog calipers, but the placement of the clip (which serves as the "probe") puts it off balance and makes it feel like it's going to fall out of your shirt pocket. As a pen, it's subpar. Gel ink always feels slippery, and the top-heavy design does not help matters. It's also not very comfortable to hold, thanks mostly to the placement of the clip, but also to the diamond shape of the grip (my roommate thought it looked like an adorable little sword). It's just not comfortable to use and feels too imprecise for any sort of technical sketching. You'll want to grip it tightly to keep it from flying out of your hand as you scribble, but you won't want to do it for very long because it digs into the pads of your fingers. There's no reason this can't be cylindrical and still keep its functionality.Maybe it's good in a pinch, but it's better suited as a statement than a proper instrument.

A great gift for a "tool guy."
I love these pens. Feel good in the hand, too. I'm a Quality Control guy in a Japanese plant, and enjoy the "measuring" ability of this pen. Yes; maybe a bit geeky. It works for me. This is my 2nd purchase. "Roughly" accurate for basic measurements. A great gift for machinists, and guys who have "projects." Great functional quality.
