I doubt if there's more than a spoonful to help the yeast work. The end result is a fantastic bread that tastes and looks and smells like home baked bread, except that the home baked is a bit more crusty. Rye bread doesn't usually need much sweetening so if you're diabetic, count it as one unit of carb (around 15 grams).
