This is a really interesting spice. I'd had it at quite specialized and authentic Szechuan restaurants and loved it, but when I got a bag of the complete flowers or seed-pods and tried crushing them, it wasn't a success because (I later learned) the seeds themselves are not pleasant. So I ordered this as the prepared/cleaned version, and got that curious fragrance-mixed-with-tingling more or less unique to this spice. I added it to a fish chower, and that was great. I added it to chopped-up fried chicken over a bed of basmati, and that was good. It's a very broad-use spice for an added bit of flavor and zing.

I prefer to grind my own Sichuan peppercorns. Some of the tongue numbing effect is dampened as the pre-ground powder ages. For your first experience with Sichuan pepper this will do nicely, but it's just not as strong as whole peppercorns.

This Szechuan peppercorn powder perfectly provides the numbing effect you are looking for. The taste is mildly citrusy, with, in my opinion, a 3/10 heat scale. That's why I knocked a star off for flavor. Still a 5-Star product overall, but a fresh Szechuan peppercorn would have a little more heat with it and not just the numbing effect. With that said, using this with some good chili or chili oil will make an excellent dish. And use more than you think, but it still goes a long way. I've barely made a dent in the container, and I need a break from the numbing effect even though I love it. Highly recommended.

It was smaller than I expected. I expected it to be the size of an ordinary spice jar but it was more like the size of a Japanese Sansyo or Shichimi Togarashi. It was a medium to fine grind. This stuff isn't easy to find where I live even though we have plenty of Asian stores, so I was glad to find it and it wasn't expensive. I don't know really how to judge Szechuan Red Peppercorns other than they were the flavor I was expecting and had that numbing effect, so I have to give it 4 stars.
