Incredible book but "missing files"(I have a fix for the missing files in my review).
Are you getting the message "Missing Files" from Ableton upon trying to do the first exercise? This is because the author renamed the "House Kit" to "Disco Kit" and Ableton can't figure this out on its own how to find the files. Here's the fix: Click the "missing files" error message at the bottom left of the app window. A "locate missing files" section will appear in the upper right corner. Set Ableton to do an auto-search inside the folder from the book you've downloaded from Halleonard.com. Ableton will find 13 of the 16 missing files automatically and replace them correctly. The last 3 files you have to manually locate within the folder and manually drag and drop onto the Missing files section. All the sounds are there for the kit, you "just" have to locate them and drag them onto the files(see the attached photos in this review if you don't know which subfolder to go into to locate the correct files). Go to "EDM Groove Samples" then into the subfolder "House" then into both the "Snares" and "Hi hats" subfolders. The 3 last files are located in those folders.Final step: The file names for the 3 last files are messed up and probably won't make sense but just trust me on this one: "Snare 1.wav" from the should be dragged onto the missing files slot called "House Kit 4.aif". You should place "Snare 2.wav" onto the missing file slot called "House Kit 8.aif. "Hi-hat loose.aif" should be dragged onto the missing "House Hi Hat 1" in the missing files section.Once you've dragged the .wav file onto the missing file slot in Ableton, Ableton will create an .asd file for the sound within the downloaded folder from Halleonard and you should be able to trigger and use all the samples within the House/Disco Kit.It took me some time to figure this out but I really hope this helps. It's really an amazing book that you don't want to miss out on!

One of my top 5 best resources
I just got this book today, and I can honestly say it's one of my best book purchases. Even though the cover has a little bit of a retro feel, the drum patterns are modern. I'm learning something new on every page.Chapter 1 starts assuming you know nothing about Ableton, and you don't really need to use Ableton at all for this book, but it quickly gets out of that. Once you get into the grooves in Chapter 2, which is most of the book, it's great. Grooves are built up slowly, one or two elements at a time, and the thought behind BPM, timing, velocity, and sound choices are all thoroughly explained. The patterns groove from the get-go, even with just the kick, snare, and hats.Read the other reviews for help with the "missing files" issue. I recommend installing the pack by double clicking the ALP file instead of trying to use the racks from the folder directly, but you'll want to hold on to the rest of those files to have the individual the samples. If you're having trouble with the racks, keep at it or email support, because they're definitely worth it. Also, the download link is on the first page (the one that you skip because it sticks to the cover). Took me forever to find.

You welling if don't get this!!!
Alright. Forgive my language but this book is the sh*t! I was going to stop there, but for the sake of those who might be looking for this type of books i'll say: It starts like any other book with things that most of us would consider irrelevant (cuz we know how to set them up) but then it goes in breaking down patterns. that's when it gets REAL. Like, this book is so well presented, and easy to follow. You can load your own drumkits and work with them. Moreover, whether you are a Logic or Ableton or any other DAW user, this book is not meant to teach you how things work for Ableton only but the principals can be reproduced easily with any program you want. Now me personally i struggle between this book and another one i had on my wishlist but Josh seemed more up to date so i purchase this book, and the result is pretty.. like.. see when you just know you've made the right decision!? that's how i felt once i got to that third chapter.I would've loved a CD version of it, but the book alone covered every style in modern days, and, if applied, yeah... you'll learn sum sh*T.GREAT INVESTMENT!!!!!

The book is very helpful and gets you started on ...
The book is very helpful and gets you started on music production grooves but, I could not for the life of me get the downloaded media content to work in Ableton, and that's the software it recommends to use. The only drawback to this is that the exercises tell you to use specific instruments so you're stuck choosing your own instruments to replace what the book suggests.

Abandoned by Hal Leonard
This book may have been good at one time. Now it's junk. The files currently on their janky website don't match with the lessons in the book. The printed install instructions also don't match. Additionally, some of the kits use features that are only available in the top tier Ableton Live Suite packages. If you own Ableton Live Standard, they will not load. There's no reason to use those features (Operator and Sampler) instead of the simple samples used elsewhere.Without accurate functioning drum kits, all of the tutorials are meaningless.Natalie in support at Hal Leonard was no help in solving these problems. Communication was nearly non existent. After months of getting no where with Hal Leonard, I tried emailing Josh Bess directly. He never responded.Avoid this book, and any book published by Hal Leonard that requires digital files. They have no interest in maintaining them.

This book is terrible
This book is a total disaster. There are a number of missing drum kits in the downloadable content. And even the drum kits that are there have missing audio files. Although there is definitely some useful info in the book somewhere along the line someone at Hal Leonard stop caring about this project. The book also reference additional video content that is included. IT IS NOT. None of the promised tutorials are there. Also in many instances patterns are copied. For example Electro 14 and electro 16 are the same exact pattern. its ridiculous. Also sometimes the copy (the written text) does not match up with whats happening in the pattern. The book has potential but because of the inconsistency between the book and the media content provided it becomes useless and frustrating. I would not recommend this book to anyone but especially not for a beginner or someone who is not already familiar with building their own drum kits.If I was Josh Bess I would be embarrassed to have my name associated with it. Very unprofessional.

Ridiculously broken
This is ridiculously brokenFirst, the book starts by referring to the "Included Online Media" as being on the desktop, without any way to get that content. After going over the book many times and trying to contact the author and editor, I finally found a URL and secret code inside a title page glued to the front cover.Next was downloading... the 900MB+ file transfer kept getting aborted, getting me nowhere; There are individual links for smaller files on the download pages, from which I was finally able to get the media content. To my surprise, the folders from the files and the folder names in the book don't match. The downloaded archives also include folders with the same name but different content, creating extraction conflicts.By page 7, we are told to use the "House" drum kit, which isn't included in the media content. I hope to get something from this book, but so far it has only being a frustrating debugging experience.Another surprise was that the book, with description "Whatever your preferred DAW is", is actually about Ableton Live; It starts with instructions to install Ableton Live trial, then goes on to introduce Ableton Live's interface, and the media content is for Ableton Live only.

Lazy writing and pretty much useless
Lots of typos and is referencing websites and downloadable files that are no longer available.I’ve tried emailen the publisher and the author about it but they don’t care. The book is pretty much useless unless they put out an updated version.

I really tried to like this book, but I can't.
I have never written an amazon review for a book, but after working with this book for a while there are a few things that really ticked me off.First, there is alot of content that you can download so that you can do the examples and drum patterns in the book. They include drum racks put together with simpler and the samples in a separate folder. When you try to use the drum rack, ableton is unable to find the samples. So, you need to put both the drumracks and the samples into the user library and use the "manage user library" function to try to link the samples with the drumracks. It doesn't work for all of the samples. If you want to work through the examples your self you will waste alot of time trying to get the drumracks to work. The other thing that torques me about the book is that the editor didn't put any effort into making the book readable. The drum patterns are screen shots from ableton. In general, it is difficult to read the drum patterns. Some of them you can read, and some you cannot. The screen shots are grey scale images and the more complicated drum patterns are not readable because they are too small and there is no contrast between the text and the background. Look at page 200 or 201 for example.I do not like the book.
