The Long Shadow of Little Rock: A Memoir

Quick, Easy Read
This book was a quick easy read, unfortunately it didn't provided the in depth information I was looking for to write my research paper. I was hoping for more personal reflections on the events and how Mrs. Bates handled them, but it was more of a summary instead. Still a good book with good information, just wasn't the personal connection I was looking for.

Southern Roots
Joy to read history of where my Mom and Dad (Alda and George Marshall) came from in Little Rock, Arkansas. My Grandfather Albert Witherspoon was an important business in Little Rock. But his Era was not covered. So, I was disappointed. But otherwise, well written.

Leader of the historic Little Rock school desegregation battle
First person detailed account from the leader of the desegregation of Little Rock's Central High in 1957 and the struggle that followed.Daisy Bates chronicles her childhood in a mill town in southern Arkansas including the racist rape and murder of her mother, that she was too young to remember. Explains how her early experiences steeled her to become a national leader. Then goes on to describe the Little Rock events with a level of detail, empathy, and insight only she could bring.

Important read
Best book I have ever read on the Little Rock Nine. Should be required reading in every high school in America.

Excellent
This is an emotionally moving story of the civil rights struggle in Little rock Arkansas in the early 50's and the role of Daisy Gatson Bates in this struggle. Sparked by the rape/murder of her mother when she was two years old, Daisy faught hard to fight racial inequality in America. As a lone black woman, she exibited courage, drive and determination in the face of much opposition, including threats on her life and that of her husband. The story of the Little Rock Nine is told from the view point of one directly involved. The book will refresh your appreciation for the courage and determination Daisy and the nine students showed during this time. Daisy Gatson Bates was a major character in this struggle. I had heard of the Little Rock Nine but I didn't know that the struggle was actually led by a black woman. This is a must-read.

A Must-Read
Courage personified in the actions of those who challenged a juggernaut with the audacity of hope, a sense of duty, and a will to be. This is beyond a nation-state story; this is a human story that transcends and elevates. Daisy Bates is a thinker and motivator. The students are remarkably perfect because displayed an individual and collective resolve. The NAACP was created for such battles. Overall, this is a sermon of how to resist!

Intelligent
Very good reviews of what actually happened to innocents in USA as civil rights struggle developed. Useful reminder to read for Black History...not just for one month as some of these harsh situations may get repeated if not learned well.
