No, you have to connect the +(Red) to the battery and the -(black) to an earth point. This is usually shown in your manual.

No you don’t. We wired a plug to the battery for quick connection and disconnection.

The under bonnet charging points are not just for jump starting.BMW recommend them as the connecting point for charging.Just connect the red positive first and then the black negative BEFORE you switch the charger on.When charged,switch the charger off and disconnect the black negative first,followed by the red positive.

Q: Does the charger start to work as soon as its plugged in, or do you have to select rhe correct program each time before it will start?

When connected you should select as the options are 12v, 6v, car, motorcycle, summer, winter. I have found if it is connected with no selection it usually detects 12v and car on its own but it is always safest to make sure it is on the correct setting. When I had a serious electrical problem the charger shut itself down and gave an error code so it is obviously of good quality with good fault detection.
