A Modern Classic and the Witchcraft Book of the Decade
Some books are useful. Some books are powerful. And once in a while, a book comes along that defines an era. Psychic Witch is that book for the 2020s. This isn’t just a guide to psychic development or energy work. It’s the book everyone comes back to. The one that gets recommended over and over, shows up in every witch’s reading list, and quietly reshaped how we talk about magick. Mat Auryn didn’t just write something helpful. He gave voice to where witchcraft is going. Yes, you’ll find some of the content in other places. Grounding, visualization, breathwork, energy sensing, casting circles, working with the elements and planets; none of that is new on its own. What makes this book extraordinary is how Mat threads it all together. He doesn’t just teach technique. He shows you how occult theory actually functions beneath the surface, how energy responds to will, how consciousness shapes reality and how that energy travels through different layers of reality. He breaks it down in a way that makes it finally make sense, even if you’ve been studying for years. Then he gives you tools to tap into that with precision and ease. You’re not just learning exercises. You’re learning how to cast with your mind, direct energy without props, and manifest real results through focused psychic command. You read a paragraph and suddenly realize you’re seeing something familiar in a way that is entirely new. Things you thought you understood open up with depth and clarity you didn’t expect. That’s the kind of insight you only get from someone who’s truly done the work. This is not a book to skim. The writing is clean and direct, but every sentence is doing something. If you rush through it, you’ll miss the quiet power sitting underneath the words. He slips in brief comments and turns of phrase that reveal just how far he’s gone in his own practice. You can tell he’s reached adept-level understanding, but he never announces it. Those who are new to the craft or haven’t gone deep into it might miss these moments, but they’re there, and they’re brilliant. There’s a lot here, and most of it hits harder when you take the time to sit with it. It’s structured to guide you, but it never talks down to you. It respects your intelligence and your experience while still expanding both. Mat Auryn stands among the greatest voices in witchcraft to emerge in decades. He blends clarity, depth, experience, and intuition in a way that few authors can. His work feels alive. It’s practical, rooted, and deeply relevant to where magick is now, not just as a tradition, but as a personal and psychic art. Every elder in witchcraft I’ve ever met who has read this book praises it highly, and for good reason. When people look back at this decade in witchcraft, Psychic Witch will be the title that defines it. It’s already happening. This book didn’t just shift conversations. It set a new standard. It belongs on every serious witch’s shelf and it’ll stay there for a long time. Any book by Mat Auryn is pure gold.

Get the New Hardcover Version with 17 Bonuses
Get the new hardcover edition because it has 17 bonus exercises! Yes 17. This is one of my favorite books—So much integrity and groundedness in his approach. I especially appreciate Mat’s encouragement to honor one’s own inner knowing, first and foremost. He offers practical tools and guidance, it’s like a self-paced training course for the price of lunch. Love this book, and his “part 2” book, Mastering Magick.

Excellent Book!
Mat's book flows from basic exercises through to more complex and complicated ideas and concepts. This occurs while also maintaining a strict hold on reality and basing things on real-life scenarios and examples. This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend to beginners in the craft and those wanting to deepen their connection to their psychic world. There's a lot of detail and work that goes into writing each of these chapters and sections within those chapters without sounding condescending or overlycomplicating ideas and concepts. Mat strikes the harmonious balance between the two extremes. There are some topics that I find really interesting and would love to learn more and deepen my study from Mat himself in order to better understand the bigger concepts. For instance, in the chapter on the elements, there's a distinction made between the Element as a description of the feeling of energy and the element as the actual thing here on planet Earth. Mat discusses how there really aren't great descriptive words (and I would clarify here that the descriptive words aren't fantastic in the English language - there might be better ones in another language) and describes, in an almost Plato-like thought-form, the Elemental energies that both are and aren't the elements that we know of on earth. I only have a few, minor, complaints and they're complaints that I've had with a lot of different metaphysical/magical books that I've read. Mind you, these are only my opinion - the book is still an excellent read! 1. I have a complaint about meditation. Not that I can't do it. I can. But it takes A LOT of work on my part because I have a form of aphasia (meaning I can't easily see pictures in my mind). There are some meditations that I can do because I've done them often enough or because my patronesses have given those meditations to me. Usually, I can't do them at all on my own. Plus, sitting meditation isn't always the best option (there's an option of doing a nature walk meditation in the book, as well). I know that we can adapt anything to our needs, but I would hope that other meditation forms (movement meditation, in particular for me) could be discussed in the future. As well, my study of Buber's philosophy doesn't allow me, in particular, to devote too much time to meditation as I feel it doesn't line up with what I'm supposed to do. 2. I would like to see more of a discussion on trauma and how that can have an effect on the psychic mind. And the reason is two-fold: 2a. Trauma can have a hugely detrimental impact on the psychic mind (in my opinion). We already know that traumatic memories are stored in the physical body, which would lead me to believe that traumatic memories can lead to fracturing the psychic mind (which is briefly touched on) and even when you reintegrate those pieces, the memories can continue to linger looking for cracks to force open. 2b. Reintegration of the shadow self, the traumatic fractures, and healing the old wounds can and often does take a LONG time. This doesn't mean that the person is not able to be a psychic witch in the meantime (NOT implied in the book). Giving people the tools they need in order to make radical transformative decisions and changes each day is an excellent part of this book. I wish that we had gotten more information and discussion on this topic. 3. This next one is just a simple tiny pet peeve of mine, which is not saying that there's anything wrong with it. There's a lot of "casting a circle" and "calling the elements" and that sort of thing. As someone who doesn't necessarily do all that (I know, I know, I'm a bad witch), it irks me when I'm reading and this comes up as "necessary" or "required" for all spell casting. Yes, I do cast a circle and call the elements and my patronesses when I do a MAJOR spell working. No, I don't do it on minor ones (or ones that are minor to me). The reason for this is spelled out in the book: I believe that the mundane is sacred and I live in that liminal space accordingly. Do I clean out the energy in my house? Yep, you bet I do. I'm a Spoonie Witch and have my own protections, boundaries, and ways of handling these things. Do I clean my house? Shoot, not often enough honestly. Again, Spoonie Witch that believes the mundane is sacred and I live in that liminal space accordingly. I don't personally stand on a lot of ceremony with my magic simply because I don't have the Spoons/Spell Slots/Energy for it. I have to make do with what I have. Again, overall, this is an excellent book and I appreciated hearing that a lot of things I'm already doing and can more formally train my psychic body/mind along with my physical and emotional bodies. Superb, harmonious, and interesting writing from Mat and I look forward to continuing to learn from him.
