amazing. I gave this to my cousin for Christmas
This. is. amazing.I gave this to my cousin for Christmas. I felt that she needed a creative outlet, being a child of divorced parents. Her mother would sometimes throw away her drawings, which she worked meticulously on, not knowing that they were more than just doodles on paper, but artwork by a young creative mind. I love this kid, and as an artist myself I wanted her to start drawing again, because she had stopped for awhile. She was always very detailed with her childhood doodles. I hope she never reads this review.I gave it to her hoping that it was easy to use and that she'd have fun with it. I later found out that she also got the Spirograph set from her mother's friend at the nail shop she works at. So, there was a bit of competition. She didn't know what to do with it, so I helped her by opening up the box and reading the instructions. I found, that making spirals and shapes with this thing is not only incredibly easy, but it's super fun. Considering the fact that it uses a lot of repetitive motions, and I had drawing repetitive things, makes this a miracle. It's a lot different from Spirograph, and a lot easier, because each of the shapey mechanisms has different shapes that you place in this frame doohickey that makes the shape as you move your pen along the stencil, and the Spirograph requires you to move one of the gear thingamajiggers around this frame thingy but you can slip your hand and make the gear fly out and break your wall clock or something. The frame thingy in this kit holds the doohickey shapey thing in place and makes it basically impossible for you to lose your place unless your hand slips off the frame and move it. This is so much better and if I'm honest, I sort of stole it for a day and used it to make my own drawings, and now I have to find it and give it back to her (which is something I shouldn't have done, and now regret) Anyways, if you are deciding to make something artsy without much effort and impress your friends, definitely buy this thing. I also must say, that when you open up the package, the gears resemble jewels hidden in a troph, while the Spirograph gears are just plain old white-clear plastic, and that it totally lame. The pen is also quite artsy with the little design on it that says "Spiral Draw" and little shape designs to match your kit. I hate those pens that come with multiple colors because they usually look really tacky, but in this case it actually is very useful. One star off, though, to the fact that it comes in a box with a plastic holder that is hard to put the gears back in quickly. The Spirograph set was in a tin box and that was much easier to store in. However, this set makes it up for the neat little book that you could draw in with fun artwork. It's a great set, and definitely worth the buy. I would buy it for myself, and that's something, I guess.

This set creates beautiful patterns...
This spiral drawing set is very different than the spirograph from the 60's. Instead of your pen point being held in place by a small hole in a geared wheel, you are moving your pen around irregular shaped hole in a large geared wheel that fits inside a slightly larger geared frame. As you move your pen around the shape, it moves the wheel one notch at a time as you complete your transit around the shape. It creates patterns that are similar but very different from spirograph. I would recommend this for kids around eight and up and any adult so inclined.

Grandkids loved it!
This was a great rainy-day diversion for my four grandchildren. They were completely engaged, and enjoyed the seemingly endless designs they could come up with. Fortunately, I have a large assortment of colored pencils and markers so they could all enjoy it at the same time. Well worth it.

Not really good for small children
I got this for my 4.5 year old, who is an avid drawer. She is unable to use it without getting frustrated. You need to hold the frame down rather tight/hard in order for the gears to not slip inside. If you can do that, it works well. I might suggest using different ink pens. I used some gel pens, and it worked pretty well. I also saw this locally at a certain craft store for almost twice the price. I'm hoping with some practice my daughter can use it, but so far its more like a new toy for me.

Fun for the kids
Pretty simple kit for fun spirograph type drawings and doodling. Had an issue with one of the spiral devices cracking/breaking when removing it from the over packaged plastic. Kids love the many different designs. All the pens worked in our set as others have complained about dried up pens.

Looks like fun
Got it as Christmas gifts for my nephews since they were into spiral art. It was smaller then I thought, but I wish I were there to see the nephews when they play with it!

More fun for mom...
I probably played with this more than my daughter. It is just like the one I had as a kid. Draw fun swirls and funky picture frames. Remember these things took some patience because if you rush you can mess up and ruin your entire work of art! Much fun! I appreciate a simple toy.
