The Minelab 440 detector gets various reviews by various people for various reasons. People who feel its justified to spend $1000 on a detector and THINK they're going to find what others won't will think this is a toy. People who are not into Minelab will say how it doesn't perform like their company does. People that flat out DON'T know how to use it will bomb it. Well, the 440 is a fantastic detector. Excellent depth, stable performance, easy to read display, easy to understand settings. If you want to go out and FIND things, this is for you. The 340 is limited in features and the 540 has features you simply don't need to justify the price difference.In the 4 years I've had this detector, I have found several pieces of jewelry, old coins and revolutionary war relics. The coil is waterproof, but the entire detector isn't. Not a problem because I go to parks. There is no backlight, but again no issue for me as I detect in the dawn to dusk window. I don't use headphones as I like to feel that I'm safer without them as opposed to being a target for someone thinking I can't hear. The target blips are loud and concise. The 440 ships with the V10 coil, which is by far the BEST coil for any of the Vanquish series. You will get extra depth with the V12, but pinpointing and target ID will vary if accustomed to the V10 ID's.Have found that the BEST batteries to get are the Energizer Lithium. They are expensive, but the machine will function at top tier until all power is exhausted.You will not go wrong. Far from a toy and for the price, a well rounded fully functional detector from a NAMED brand.. Get a REAL Garrett AT Pro pinpointer. They sell for $125. You won't believe what you'll find.Target IDs to be aware of: 13 Nickel, 23-27 Copper Penny / Dime, 29-31 Quarter, 9 usually Gold.

The Minelab Vanquish 440 Multi-Frequency Pinpointing Metal Detector is fantastic. This is my first metal detector, and it was a chore listening to hours of testimonial videos and reading reviews before making a final decision; however, it was worth the time and effort. I'm a beginner and this unit is easy to use both at home using the owner's manual and while away using nothing but memory. It was manufactured for the novice, while providing a detector capable of satisfying the needs of someone more skilled. The company has been in business for a number of years and is noted for manufacturing a highly quality product. The detector arrived quickly and came packaged very well. Based upon what I received, I highly recommend this product.

We bought this for something extra to do on a trip we were taking to Florida. It's very easy to use. Basically point and click. It is definitely more accurate at finding large aluminum cans than smaller jewelry or coins. But I figure that's probably all metal detectors strictly do to the size of the objects

The first unit ordered got lost in shipping and I don't know exactly what happened. At any rate, Amazon was quick to ship another unit which arrived on time. Working through Amazon's customer service was a breeze, I might add. Unit was as advertised and works fine.

I have 2 identical gold lockets. One I lost in the grass amd the other I still have. I can't even find the one I strategically placed in the grass with this thing. It picks up nothing.....barely registers the gold piece when it's right infront of it. Haven't found anything and I've tried for HOURS looking for this gold locket. Not worth my money or time.

I used this to find nails, screws and other hardware around the barn in the runs and corral. Unfortunately the soil has grains of iron ore. I was able to adjust the detector to ignore the background iron ore and found the usual assortment of nails, screws, fencing staples, bits of bailing wire and other hardware that, if ingested, could have killed our horses and llamas.
