Real People with Big Hearts and Angst to Spare
The characters were easy to love and relate to, except Claude who was an unknowing, manipulative star jerk. The characters all had delightful attributes coupled with a few major flaws except Charlie and Caspar who were innately kind and lovable. This book was enjoyable, sometimes riveting, surprising and a joy to read. I am hopeful there will be a sequel with Jason as a doting grandfather, Rachel and Caspar happily married but encountering the ups and downs of reality. Well done, Emma Kennedy😊 Who would this book appeal to? Folks like me who thrive on dysfunctional family stories that could be true and usually have a happy ending.

Definitely a must read , really!
What a wonderful story. It was heartgrabbing, suspenseful, enthralling and I never wanted to put it down. I'm going to start keeping a journal, just so my own adult children might want to know who I am one day. Thank you so much for the wonderful read.

Best book I’ve read in a long while
This was a story I was sorry to see end. It followed the same characters over many decades. Every character was so believable, the relationships between men and women, friends, sister’s, parents and children. I could relate to their struggles, disappointments and triumphs and the touching secret that wasn’t revealed for many years. First book I’ve read by this author but will be looking for more.

Emotional
Couldn't decide if I liked Eleanor but still really liked the story! Just because people don't act like we think they should doesn't make them bad people. Good story. Lots of emotions.

I’ve been transported to a different world with new friends and now returned to my real life but wish I could go back and continue with them for a while longer…loved this book!

The Things We Left Unsaid
The story took a few chapters before it got interesting. Don’t give up and read until you reach the end. Lovely.

I love Emma Kennedy’s work; her writing, her acting, her comedy and her superb quizzing. ( As a fellow Beatles fan I was thrilled by her performance as a ‘Walrus’ on ‘Only Connect’! ) This book was consumed in a day, and would have been in a single sitting if everyday life hadn’t got in the way. Several beautiful love stories interwoven and convincingly portrayed. And, is it just me, or did the constant references to ‘The Archers’ put Lilian’s voice into my head every time Agnes spoke?..

Enjoyable book with some great characters, a little predictable at times but worth a read. Easy to pick up from when I last put down, happy to have read it.

I’ve had a pretty bad case of reader’s block for the last few weeks, and yet I managed to get through this in a day. I reckon that’s a good sign. But enough about me. This is the second “straight” novel from the versatile Emma Kennedy. If you know her memoir of disastrous childhood holidays, The Tent The Bucket And Me, or the TV series that came from it, The Kennedys, you’ll know that Emma is a fine comic writer (a very hard trick to pull off, I always think), but this is more in the vein of an Aga Saga. Although I am nowhere near the target audience, I loved it. You’ve seen better synopses in other reviews, so I won’t repeat here. What I found was a real sense of place and time, especially evocative of bohemian London in the 1960s, and some sharply drawn characters. The women take centre stage, naturally, and the relationships between them - not just between Rachel and her mother Eleanor, but her aunt Agnes too. There’s a mystery, and a subtle dance of the seven veils as Eleanor’s secret is gradually revealed to Rachel and us. Like a good whodunnit, you’ll feel clever enough to make a good stab at what’s really going on, but still find room to be surprised at the end. Most of all, if you have a parent or two, it reminds you that before they had you and had to get boring they actually might have had pretty interesting lives themselves. Come to think of it, I might recommend it to my own kids for that very reason.

First time author for me and this is one of the best books I have read. I didn’t want it to end and will certainly be reading another of Emma’s books.

Plot twist after plot twist in a wonderful story of family and relationship life paths, breakdown and bond. Well written, and very relatable. I cried, I smiled, I regretted and I was warmed all the way through, with all the characters. Loved this book, a great read, with many layers that are cleverly put together with a seamless journey through the story.
