A Mystery Thriller Like No Other
Before I get into specifics of the game, I'll lay some ground work as to the story (spoiler free of course). You are Makoto, a very average teen-age boy chosen to join the elite "Ultimate" students at Hope's Peak Academy. The school is the institution of many ultimate students, who are the best at what they do. Only the best and brightest get into Hope's Peak. However, quickly the students find themselves in a deadly game lead by a sinister mastermind, Monokuma. In short, Monokuma tells the students that they are all trapped inside the school with no way to escape EXCEPT to kill another student without anyone else finding out "whodunnit". If that happens, the student will be set free, and the rest of the student body will be punished. However, if the murderer is found out, then the murderer will be punished, and the game will continue. The game has very interesting and relatable characters (minus 1 or 2 annoying ones), each having a very unique personality. Some characters, despite the situation, actually seem to be enjoying themselves. Some are downright pushy, and demanding. Others... mysterious, you never know what's going on in their head. Which makes it all the more difficult to decide who to believe, and who not to believe.-Gameplay-At certain points during the game, you're allowed free roam of the school (which is done by allowing you to freely walk the school, in 3D). Once entering a smaller room where you can explore, the navigation will become point-and-click. Using triangle will allow you to see what items/characters can be interacted with, and simply clicking 'X' on those characters/items will perform the interaction. Interacting with students will allow you to spend time with them, learn some of their background, and build a relationship; in turn, increasing your Stat Points (SP), and possibly gaining a new ability to use during the trials. Interacting with objects can sometimes net you a Monokuma coin, which can be used in a coin slot machine in the shop to gain items. These items can be given as gifts to other students, which (depending on the item and character) may improve or hurt your relationship with them.Upon the discovery of a body, the game will enter "Investigation Mode". You'll be able to examine items in greater detail, taking note of important clues (which will be added to your "Truth Bullet" notes). Speaking to other students during this time may give some insight to what they think happened, and could lead to some discoveries of your own. Investigation Mode will continue until all Truth Bullets are found. Then begins the Class Trial. The class trial consists of 4 main sections: Endless Debate, Hangman's Gambit, another section consisting of destroying false statements in time with music, and the Review.Endless Debate - you are given certain truth bullets (between 1 and 6) to use against weak statements made by other characters. Weak statements are shown as text in a different color (yellow if I remember correctly). Just sit and listen. Once a weak statement appears that you believe you have a truth bullet that contradicts it, select that particular truth bullet (by pressing 'L') and fire it at the statement (using triangle). If it's correct, the trial will progress, if it's not... you'll lose health. Losing all of your health will cause everyone to believe you're the culprit and you'll lose (this goes the same for all main trial sections).Hangman's Gambit - a simple game of hangman, but I hope you were paying attention just before this section started... otherwise you'll be lost. Sure, you're given a few letters, but without knowing the previous accusations.... you'll be lost. Knowing what letters to select to fill the puzzle, just shoot the letters one by one and fill in the puzzle. Pretty simple.Rhythm Section (1v1 Debate) - this part begins when you have someone backed into a corner. They are spouting random statements to refute your proof. Simply press 'X' to lock on to the statements, and triangle to fire. You only have so many bullets though, so you'll have to press square from time to time to reload your truth bullets. Pressing 'R' will slow down the tempo a bit, and also give you unlimited truth bullets. Each time you destroy a statement, their health is chipped away.... vice versa if you miss statements, you lose health. Reduce their health to zero and you'll have the opportunity to land the final blow and prove them wrong. Finally, we have the Case Review. This portion, in my opinion, is extremely well done. You pretty much have a comic book laid out in front of you, which just so happens to have some missing panels. The comic book illustrates the events that happened during the murder, and gives you a bank of panels at the bottom of the screen to fill in the missing pieces (note that clicking an empty panel will give you a hint as to what goes there). Once you're done, the murder will be played out in comic book fashion (and it's very well done, btw). After all is said and done, the student body will vote as to who the guilty party is. Which leads to one of my few disappointments of the game. A cutscene showing the results of the vote has not been updated, it appears very blurry as if it was directly ported from the PSP version (this also is the case for another scene where Monokuma activates the punishment button). The guilty party is chosen, and then "punished" in front of everyone, in many unique yet bizarre ways. The trials and punishments are easily the best portions of the game, followed by the investigation. There are multiple trials, and each trial is increasingly more difficult to figure out.... leading to the trial becoming much more interesting. In the early portions, you can kind of have an idea of who committed the crime before you walk into the trial.... but later on, I didn't have a clue.I also want to note that you are granted an SP meter to use during segments of the trial. It acts differently depending on what segment you are in and it will refill quickly after use.- End gameplay-The presentation is beautifully done, with bright colors, very detailed environments, special effects, etc. This thing got a major overhaul from the pics I've seen of the PS2 version. I only noticed one or two instances where the devs cut corners on the port. The story, like other games of this nature (999, Virtue's Last Reward, Phoenix Wright, ect) will draw you in and have you hooked from beginning to end. You grow to care about the characters, especially one in particular (won't give it away though). The music is very fitting to the scenarios, and its very well done. Some seem to rave over the music, which is fine... I think the music is indeed great, but I don't necessarily need the soundtrack.I feel like I'm beginning to dig pretty deep on what to say, so I'll let the review end here. All I have left to say is.... when DanganRonpa 2 hits later this year, I'll be picking it up on day 1. This is a truly excellent experience, and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys this type of game.9/10The game also includes an NG+ mode called School Mode, which I haven't played... so I really can't comment on it.

I’m in total despair. Why?
I’m in total despair. Why? I can’t believe I missed this awesome game for so long! I recently just got my very own PS Vita and was looking for new games to buy. And I kept bypassing this game because of the title and the cover. I assume it was a rhythm game and I definitely was wrong.DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a mystery visual novel, where each chapter ends with a trial. Think of Ace Attorney meets Hunger Games. The plot is awesome and I just couldn’t put the Vita down. It was always one more minute. The game takes place in a dystopian world, where “The Tragedy” destroy society as we know it. Where rioting and despair rules. But there is one place in the world that houses Hope for the future – Hope Peak’s Academy. However, what the school didn’t realize that the enemy was already inside, turning their shelter into a killing game. Now, you and 14 other students must survive the game. The plot is slowly revealed between 6 chapters. Each chapter lasts about 5-6 hours. Each chapter revolves around 1 case. The main plot is not revealed until the very end, so you don’t really know the whole truth throughout the game. So, the game keeps you interested because you become so invested in the characters’ well-being and figuring out their stories. Now come to the puzzle and fun part. The trials are the real time stealers here. I have not officially checked the time since I get too engrossed to notice, but the trial themselves takes about 2-3 hours to complete. I like to note I played the game in “Kind” mode. So, it was not as harsh as “mean” mode. I found that the trial was not as difficult to figure out as long as you pay attention to the details and figure out the contradiction in the other students’ argument. For me, I found Ace Attorney trials to be a little bit harder than this game. In regards to the logic, I mean. It’s a little more obvious in DanganRonpa. So, I didn’t have too much difficulty getting through the trials. I messed up a few times but that was due to the rhythm portion. In any case, if you make a mistake, you can always redo it. The only thing it affects is your final grade, but it’s not a huge deal. The arguments are timed so you can’t spend time thinking it over. Luckily, you can pretty much save at any time except during the prologue. The graphics are gorgeous and fit the visual novel idea perfectly. Just imagine flat 2D story book characters against a 3D background. Like a pop-up book. I know I’m explaining it badly but the visuals are awesome. As an artist, I love the unique design for each character and it matches their personalities. The backgrounds are clear and detailed. For the technical, here is a quick summary. There is no lag. Transition from room to room is pretty seamless. Navigation was easy to use. I only used the English dialogue, so I can’t comment on the Japanese. But I usually find the Japanese voice acting to be awesome in any game. Anyway, the English voice acting was good and definitely matches well with each character. There is English subtitles. It's not fully voiced throughout. The trial and cut scenes are completely voiced. At other times, it will be a quick comment from whoever is speaking. I can’t comment on translation from the Japanese either. Sorry. There are some extras at the end, but I haven’t a chance to explore it yet.GET THIS GAME! If you like visual novels with puzzle elements, this is for you. And if you are an Ace Attorney fan, get it. However, if you are not reader, then pass this one by. I will like to note there are gruesome murder scenes and foul language for those buying for the children. I have no regrets with this purchase. I have already started DangaRonpa 2 and I will eventually go back to get all the bonuses for this game later. But right now, I got my entertainment worth. This is an awesome game.

I'd never played a visual novel before so I wasn't sure I would like it. I used to think that visual novels weren't for me. Turns out I loved it! The characters are interesting and the story makes you want to play more and more to discover what comes next. Can't wait to play the second and the upcoming third game in the series!

Great addition to vita adventure lineup
Currently playing chapter 3 (that's about 6-7+ hours into the game). It's a Japanese adventure game similar to Zero Escape moodwise, but 19+ (for mature) version of Ace Attorney for Nintendo at the same time. Story is about survival and trust just like Battle Royale (novel/movie), Hunger Games. The main flow of each chapter is following:1. Story (one way flow reading texts)2. Freetime (hang around the school, talk to people you like, give gifts, find more about the game story and get bonus skills for the trial)3. One~two people get murdered each chapter and you have to investigate.4. After investigate, you hold a trial with other classmates and have to find the true culprit, and failing to do so will cost everyone's life except the culprit him/herself.What I like-----------------1. PS Vita currently lacks a decent adventure genres, or more like a decent non-indie title.Luckily, this Q1 is full of nice vita games including danganronpa, toukiden, dynasty warriors, etc.2. Very detailed chapter flowEach chapter has several parts and it's very well crafted with detail. Doesn't feel repetitive.3. Engaging story4. Extremely well done localization. I can't find single Japanese in the game. You get to choose either Japanese or English, which is appreciated.Who should play this---------------------------1. You are into Japanese animes2. You like text adventures with a lot of reading and something that gives you thoughts.3. You like very serious stories or appreciate 999 for NDS or Ace Attorney series.Who shouldn't play this------------------------1. Those who are not used to mystery novels/detective stories. Game designs and illustrations may look nice and cute, but beneath lies a lot of psychopathic concepts as well as psychothic characters but of course all contribute to the well-written story. Story flow/characters' ideologies might/might not make you sick if you're used to playing major franchise games only.2. There are many deaths and punishment scenes and they are very graphic. Of course, there are tons of graphic PS3/XBOX360 games out there like God of War, etc anyway, but as it's 2D drawing, it is shocking in its own way it still might make you sick if you're not used to these.3. This is no Dynasty Warriors and you will be reading and thinking and inferring most of the time throughout the game.I will update my review after beating the game, but so far, great addition to the vita lineup.

Awesome game
There are two types of people that'll enjoy this game. Ones that will love it and ones that won't. For me I loved this game and this is easily one of the best games on the vita for me. The art style is unique and the story is intense from the start to end. Now to be as unbiased as possible, I can see why this can be boring to some people. Don't buy this game expecting innovating gameplay, buy this game expecting a picture book with choices that affect the outcome of the game to some extent. This game revolves around you running around the school piecing together clues to find out how your classmates were murdered in the so called "murdered game". Once you've gathered enough clues there will be a class trial, where you find contradictions in others words to prove your point and catch their lies. Now I am not much of a reader at all, and to be honest the gameplay does get dull after a couple of class trials because they don't change. But the gripping and intense story was more than enough for me to believe this is one of the best games for the vita. So if you're thinking about buying this game, give it a try, like all games you like it or you don't, but this game is really something special.

MONOKUMA
I love this game. It really is wacky piece of work.Reminded me of Pheonix Wright....you have weird characters with weird cases. There are social links like the Persona Series. There is tons or replaybility compared to the Wright series.Replability comes from the School Mode after the main story: Not going to spoil anything :)There is one thing I didn't like, it was not difficult to beat. The difficulty levels are pointless in the gameplay part.It worth 45 dollars to me.
