It's my go-to baby gift. Before kids can follow a story they can look for things and talk about them. Great for interacting. My oldest is fifty. My youngest is 25. This book stands the test of time. Get it out when the child is about a year old. It will last through toddlerhood. Review: A classic that every household with young children should own - As someone who has entered his second half-century of life, I can remember as a youngster the impact of Richard Scarry books. Even when I had outgrown the simple language in his books and was reading more sophisticated fare, the whimsical pictures and busy events depicted in the books were still a source of joy. Which is why it's surprising that a lot of parents today have not heard of Scarry. That's a shame, because his books have a wonderfully engrossing quality that draws in children like few other books on the market today. Scarry's anthropomorphic animal kingdom is filled with crazy happenings and near disasters as its characters navigate their world. The illustrations contain an attention to detail that undoubtedly served as an inspiration for the "Where's Waldo" books, as little events occur in hidden places and drive curiosity and exploration of the pictures and text. This "Best Word Book Ever" is a large format book that helps beginning readers attach words to images. In this, it's exemplary, and will keep youngsters reading for hours. The simple item labels occur within a context that helps children understand how words and what they describe fit together. It's simple, yet brilliant, stuff. The best recommendation I can give: This book belongs in every household with young children. It's so good, it may be one of those that gets handed down from one generation to next. I know, because that's what I did, passing down this book that I loved as a child to my own son. And I just gave a copy to my young nephew this past Christmas. Truly essential.

Teaches so much in a fun way
This really is the best word book ever, as the title says. It teaches so many everyday situations to young children. The pictures of the animals are beautifully illustrated . The young boys especially appreciate the fire house and trucks, bulldozers, and tractor pictures. It’s also always fun to find lowly worm throughout the pages.

Fantastic Vocabulary Builder
This book was my son's favorite book to have read to him before nap time. I say read, but it's more of a picture book that sparks questions and conversations. He especially loved the pictures for Whisper and Shout and would point at them repeatedly so I would whisper the word whisper and shout the word shout. He found that to be hilarious. Two decades have passed and now my niece has given birth to her first child. I recently sent her this same book because I know she and her baby will enjoy it as much as my child and I did.

A classic book that’s loved by young kids
One of the best books ever for 2-3 year olds. Introduces them to the world with wonderfully detailed illustrations of many different aspects of life in different settings. The book also teaches kids words and letters and is really just a gem of a book. I remember it and other Richard Scarry books fondly from my own childhood, and now my 3 year old son loves it, too.

His books really are the "best books ever!"
I bought this book 40 years ago for my children and they loved it. The illustrations are museum quality and so much fun for children. Now, I bought all 3 large hardcover Richard Scary books for my 2 grandchildren. Sadly, they are with their parents in Japan as my son is in the Airforce. However, I watch the 3-year-old lay on the floor, carefully turning the pages with awe in his eyes. Great teaching books!

My parents use to read this book to my sister and I when we were young (3-6yrs old) and they use to call out the names on the page and we had to find it. We learnt very quickly and enjoyed the colourful pages. I only remembered we use to have this book when Amazon recommended this book and others by the author and purchased it for my son (age 2yrs). Boy, did his eyes open up wide!!! He already knows a fifth of the words before the book, and now he his learning more with it and enjoying all the characters and sketches on each page. So glad it is still in reproduction. Now, my memories are coming back every time we go through a new page and I call out the names of the words for my son!! I recommend others to get this book for a great way for toddlers to learn more words!!
