Grindhouse Purgatory

I quite enjoyed this fanzine of stories about the old grindhouse days--I was born in 1974, so I grew up on Drive-ins and video stores (not the same thing, of course, but it made me wish that I could have experienced the days of all-night theaters). There were some good movie reviews, personal stories (wished for more), spotlights on porn stars and actors, and a whole host of other goodies--including short stories.While it looks like a fanzine, it's magazine sized and bounded like a thin trade, which was nice. Layout was nice and it was good to see the various photos throughout. Heres hoping that they make this into a series. Recommended!

A throwback to the grand old days of horror zinery. Loved the Andy Copp memorial. All the bite and bile of the 80s and 90s for a new era.

42nd Street Pete has been very unkind to me about my reviews of his zine (this is the first issue), so all I'm going to say is if you like articles written as revenge against his past enemies (he just can't let it go) and some good articles about genre films by other writers, you may enjoy this zine. The biographies of porn stars are taken directly from Wikipedia, though, with a word changed here and there to try and disguise the fact. If you can look past that, you may learn something here and there. Not my cup of tea, though.

Addictive!

I was entertained by the personal stories about soliciting prostitutes. That's about it. If you know anything about exploitation films, none of these reviews will offer you anything new. Also, I had a good laugh over the takedown of Tarantino due to the fact that his entire oeuvre is not "grindhouse." No, it's not. He's made one homage to grindhouse. He makes other films too.
